We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cybur Fox a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cybur, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my parents who worked hard to provide for my sister and I. We wouldn’t see them as often so as siblings we’d rely on each other for company. Although there were plenty of unhappy times, I never faulted my parents for not being there because they took care of us in their own way. They taught me to work hard, keep pushing and all good things will come eventually. Patience is key. My ambitions and drive towards my career also influence my work ethic. The excitement to keep learning new techniques, color theories, different styles. I love seeing the growth I have done and looking back at the challenges I’ve overcame, it’s very inspiring. I’m very grateful to be a career where there is endless amounts of knowledges.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My story is pretty simple, I was the weird kid in the corner that played video games and watched/drew anime characters. Those subjects heavily influence my career now and it’s very rewarding getting to tattoo them on people who share the same interests as me! It’s exciting hearing why people get the tattoos they’re getting. Sometimes it’s a deep meaning or it’s just cool! Regardless, it’s fun meaning new people.
I’m hoping to continue expand my brand. Maybe open an online shop for more merchandise for those who aren’t able to get a tattoo but would like to support my work!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say being patient, hardworking and being able to take criticism are very important when it comes to tattooing. If I don’t understand something, I either ask or try to do as much research as I can! There is an endless amount of knowledge and learning when it comings to tattooing. My advice would be get tattooed, get to know the artists, draw, create a diverse portfolio and just be patient! Drawing is extremely important! Finding an apprenticeship can be very challenging but you have to be determined and expect to make sacrifices.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My partner, Nestor has helped me throughout my journey of being a tattoo artist. He’s been there since the beginning and seen me at my lowest point. He has pushed me to strive for better not just in tattooing but in life. My clients that have supported me since the beginning have also pushed me and shaped me into the artist I want to be. My friends are always there for me like I am for them, we constantly encourage each other to grow. The owner of my current shop, Renee has been very helpful and has provided such a welcoming atmosphere where I truly feel comfortable in. She has also shared her time and knowledge on tattooing with me. There are many individuals I’ve met on my journey that I am very grateful towards. I don’t think I’d be where I am at without everyone’s support and I’d like to thank you all.
