We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cynthia Dawson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cynthia, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
Being generous is something I truly love. Whether it’s giving a family going through a hard time a free photo session or doing a small kind act, it always feels good to give back. When my daughter was diagnosed with cancer, our family faced one of the toughest times in our lives. But the kindness and support we got from our community was amazing and full of heart. Even in those hard moments, I knew so many people cared and wanted to help however they could.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I love being able to help families remember the people they love most. It seems like the only constant thing about raising a family is that things are always changing and growing. Helping moms hold on to the season they are in and showing them how beautiful their life is through photography is the most exciting thing I can do.
Every time I capture a moment, I’m reminded that these are real stories of love, laughter, and the everyday magic that too often be forgotten. My goal is to make moms feel proud of the beautiful love and chaos that comes with family life. It means the world to me to create images that families will look back on and smile for years to come.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Oh wow, this is a tough one! I would definitely say perseverance is key. Photography is a challenging to learn, and there were so many times I wanted to quit. But I was really driven, and I found joy in every part of the process. I’m sure that made a big difference for me. So my best advice is to keep going, even when things get tough. You’ll be glad you did.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is a mom who’s juggling the busy, beautiful chaos of family life. She probably has young kids under 12 and is doing her best to balance work, family, and everything in between. She cares about the little moments, like the way her kids laugh, and she wants to hold onto those memories before they change. She might feel a little stressed or unsure about how to make family photos easy and fun, but she’s ready to trust someone who can guide her gently through the process. Most of all, she wants to capture the love in her family exactly as it is in a romanticized way.
