Meet Cynthia Finefrock

We were lucky to catch up with Cynthia Finefrock recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Cynthia , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I believe everything happens for a reason, and when I look back at the journey that brought me to where I am today, it all feels connected in a way that makes perfect sense. If any one of those moments had been different, I don’t think I would be where I am now. Becoming an author and working on Winston the Traveling Dog was the culmination of a series of steps that, in hindsight, were all meant to be. Through writing this book and sharing Winston’s adventures, I’ve found a true sense of purpose. There’s something so special about bringing joy to others, and seeing the smiles that people get from Winston’s photos makes it all worthwhile. That feeling of happiness, knowing I’m making a difference, is what keeps me going.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m the author of the Winston the Traveling Dog series. My books teach children about different parts of the world in a fun and educational way. In addition to my work as an author, I’m passionate about advocating for animals in need. That’s why I donate a portion of the proceeds from my book to animal rescue organizations. Animals have always had a special place in my heart, and I believe it’s important to support those who need it most.

I’m constantly looking for ways to expand my reach and spread the message of kindness, both to animals and to people. I’m excited for future projects and to continue building a brand that’s grounded in the values of adventure, compassion, and joy.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were hard work, resilience, and my knowledge of photography. Hard work has been essential because success doesn’t happen overnight—there’s always something to be done, whether it’s writing, editing, or promoting my book. Resilience has been crucial in navigating the ups and downs of this creative path, particularly when faced with challenges or setbacks. And my knowledge of photography has been key, especially since my book Winston the Traveling Dog relies heavily on visual storytelling. Capturing the right images and telling Winston’s story through photography has made all the difference in bringing the book to life.

My advice to those just starting out is to never give up. You never know when that big break is coming, and perseverance can make all the difference. Keep working hard, stay resilient in the face of obstacles, and continue honing your skills. Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I believe collaboration is key in growing your audience. I’d love to connect with animal advocates, elementary school administrators, picture book fans, and other authors such as myself.
