We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cynthia Flynn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I think optimism comes from those around you and the single most important decision you can make in life is your spouse; the person you choose to be around more than anyone else in life. I think having an optimistic spouse, one who always sees the best in people and in circumstances has helped me be (and stay) an optimist. As a business owner, I also get to choose the people I get to work with on a daily basis – and by choosing to work with people who have kind hearts and who see the best in others, also raises the level of optimism in our law firm’s culture.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are a growing employment defense law firm where we protect and defend business owners. We do everything from advice and counsel (i.e. helping a client who needs to hire or terminate an employee) as well as every litigation aspect of employment law (where we defend businesses who are being sued by a current or former employee). We also host a series of free webinars to help prepare the business owners we represent for upcoming challenges and changes in the law. We care about small and mid-size businesses since they are the backbone of our society.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My first job was a hostess in the restaurant industry at 15 years old. I loved it. I loved it so much in fact, that I stayed in the restaurant industry, through high school, college and law school and even once I graduated law school, I spent another 2 years in the industry, continuing to work nights and weekends while I was a lawyer for my day job. I was a very shy kid and in 8th grade I was voted shyest in my class. I think that working in the restaurant industry and having to walk up to a group of strangers multiple times a night to seat them, to say hello, to get their orders, helped bring me out of my shell and helped me build people skills and a natural hustle. I think three qualities that I’ve gained through my journey would be building people skills, working hard and keeping a positive, uplifting attitude.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed or stressed I meditate. I try to pause throughout the day anytime I’m feeling overwhelmed to just focus on my breathing. I meditate daily for ten minutes and over the years I’ve used different apps. Currently I’m really into Calm and that’s become my daily app. I’ve found this to be very helpful in feeling better, engaged and less overwhelmed overall. I also read for 10+ minutes a day to do something for myself that helps me continue to learn and grow – I just read Hidden Potential by Adam Grant and it was phenomenal!
