Meet Cynthia Krantz

We were lucky to catch up with Cynthia Krantz recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Cynthia with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I get my work ethic from my father. He was a big time CEO and was a brilliant man. Someone once asked him how he became so successful (he’d grown up on welfare subsistance farming in a single parent home). He responded with “I’m not the smartest guy in the room, but I’ll out work everyone else!” He also used to say profits are made after 6pm. Meaning going the extra mile at work pays dividends. I have learned to do a lot on my own as well as foster a team and delegate so I have the ability to go the extra mile because I’m not so taxed trying to do it all. I recognize that it’s best to be a person who delivers – for your family, friends and work. Being a reliable person goes far.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a dedicated marketing expert with over 15 years in the industry. I have worked for agencies big and small, including JWT NY (now Wunderman Thompson), AKQA Portland and Chalk242. I got my start in production at JWT where I cut my teeth on some of the biggest brands. That taught me to respect process, excellence and details – who knew appropriate branding included not just color and size but precisely measured placement? I then started taking on rolls as a Project Manager and quickly Senior Project Manager roles.

I am also a mom of 2 incredible boys and wife to a fantastic husband who is both my partner and best friend. In 2019 my son needed me to support him more in his development. After talking to some big wigs in the industry, I heard a chorus of voices telling me to start my own agency and serve smaller clients with the same excellence as we did at the big ad firms. I am a classically trained Mezzo soprano (hobby!) and so Mezzo Creative LLC was born from my passion for bringing people together around creative arts and building teams in marketing.

Mezzo works with clients small to mid sized – everything from Real Estate to Pharma to Consumer Goods. It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve them with the team of experts I have curated!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The 3 qualities, skills or knowledge areas that have most helped me on my journey are: Resilience, Resourcefulness, and Mentorship.

I have learned the ad world is cyclical – there are slow periods and fast paced periods. Be prepared for both and rest when you can because the crush is coming! Resilience is a key factor in riding these waves.

Resourcefulness is critical because if you want to learn – ask people who know. If you want to connect with an expert, network! I have found resourcefulness to be a valuable asset when solving problems, learning new skills and building a team.

Mentorship helps you – and you can mentor too!- to grow, face challenges and see solutions around obstacles. Having trusted mentors is how I was able to have the confidence to establish and build my business. It helped me pivot in my career because I had sounding boards!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was holding me to a high standard and supporting me so I could meet it. In middle school, I was struggling to stay focused and write down my homework assignments. My parents knew my potential for good grades, but saw I had a gap in my focus. So my mom worked with me to establish disciplines by checking my homework notebook every night to stay on task. I regularly set reminders on my phone or Alexa. I know now, if it’s not written down it’s not going to happen! My detail oriented organizational nature comes from this childhood experience and has set me up for success as a Project Manager and business owner.
