Meet Cynthia Muir

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cynthia Muir a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Cynthia , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

When I was a teenager, my mother had a restaurant, where I helped her every summer vacation. I learned a lot about work ethics from her. My mother is a very hard-working and respectful woman. I saw her dealing with customers and solving problems, always calm and with a smile. From her, I learned that the most important thing is to believe in yourself, work hard, and lead by example. That way, my team grows with me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

In Oct. 2022, I created Exotic Gourmet catering, where fusion cuisine and luxury presentations stand out, we do weddings, social and corporate events.
I created Exotic Gourmet because I not only love cooking, I also do all the design and meticulously choose the color palette, textures that will go in each of my stations and dishes, thanks to my dedication and passion for what I do, now in October 25th 2024 we will celebrate 2 years of pure growth, I went from just selling chocolates in markets to organizing events from 50 to 500 people, what I love most about my job is seeing the reaction of my clients when they try my food and when they see my presentations, seeing them so happy, is what fills my heart.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I am from Peru so my first language is Spanish, definitely learning English was the first thing, I have been here for 7 years, the first years were of adaptation and the next 2 of the pandemic, during that time I dedicated myself to studying, putting together my work plan, creating my projects, I never wasted time always thinking about the future so when the time came I would have everything ready, I started my career at a very young age, at 12, so one of my skills is the speed and precision with which I do things and I handle myself in the kitchen, I believe that over the years you polishes your skills, but my biggest advice is never stop innovating and educating yourself, knowledge is our best friend and don’t doubt yourself, if you have one or several talents, concentrate on one and give your best, don’t do many things at once, one project at a time don’t put things off until tomorrow, if you know you can do them today.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My husband, since without his help I would not have been able to achieve anything, while he worked I put my project together, and most importantly, he does not speak Spanish so thanks to him I learned English.
