We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cyrena Ybarra a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cyrena, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being the only one in the room who looks like me has strengthened my confidence in both my voice and my presence. I’ve learned that preparation is key to success, which is why I dedicate myself to thorough research and a deep understanding of the market and my competitors.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I run a floral business while attending college full-time, and what excites me most is creating beautiful bouquets and being part of my clients’ special moments. Giving back to the community is an important part of my brand, which is why I’ve partnered with local photographers to gift free bouquets and family photo shoots during holidays like Mother’s Day. I’m also thrilled to announce that we’ll be hosting a flower workshop this January, where we’ll teach the art of bouquet making—perfect whether you’re exploring a new business opportunity or simply want to create for personal enjoyment. We welcome anyone eager to learn and create with us.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are creativity, adaptability, and relationship building. Creativity fuels my ability to design unique bouquets that make each client’s moment special. Adaptability has been essential in balancing the demands of running a floral business while attending college full-time, and in navigating the ever changing needs of customers and the market. Relationship building has allowed me to connect with clients and community partners, from collaborating with photographers to hosting workshops. For those just starting out, my advice is to practice your craft consistently, stay open to learning and feedback, and invest in genuine connections because skill, flexibility, and strong relationships will carry you further than you can imagine.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My mom has been the most impactful influence when it comes to the challenges I’ve faced in my business. Beyond being an incredible mother, she brings a wealth of business knowledge that I truly value and often lean on for guidance. She constantly pushes me to grow, reminding me that the sky is the limit and that I’m capable of more than I sometimes believe. Working alongside her has not only strengthened my business but also deepened our bond, and I feel proud and grateful to share this journey with her.
