We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful D-Win. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with D-Win below.
Hi D-Win, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
During high school, I discovered my true calling. Even though I initially thought I would pursue a career in sports, I soon realized that I wasn’t talented enough to make it to the NBA. However, I found a new passion in music and poured all my energy into it. In college, I studied fashion design and art, but music remained my side hustle. I never took my talent seriously, simply playing around and having fun. But as time went on, I realized that music came naturally to me and I had a knack for it. My journey in the music and fashion industry has been a tumultuous one, with its share of highs and lows. But I remain constantly inspired and focused on my goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a multi-talented individual, I am able to express my creativity in various industries, such as rap and fashion design. It is a privilege to be able to turn my ideas into reality and share them with the world. Ever since I was in the 7th grade, I have aspired to be a rapper, and recently, I had the incredible opportunity to perform at Bet Gospel Superfest. The performance can currently be viewed on television. My passion for music and performance began in middle school, where I also adopted my stage name “D-Win”. Additionally, my brand “Winfield” was born when my niece Corrie came into the world. Keep an eye out for my upcoming full cut and sew collection, set to be released in February.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the key aspects that had a profound impact on my journey was relocating to Chicago for my college education. Having been raised in a sheltered Christian environment, living independently without my family and immersing myself in the college lifestyle of a new city was an exciting experience. The second noteworthy element was achieving musical success within just two years of forming an alternative hip hop duo called “The Rocketeers”. This taught me not to let fame and television appearances change my character, as they can easily fade away, and you may have to start from scratch. The third significant aspect was returning to my hometown of Indianapolis after being away for fourteen years. Reconnecting with my family and old friends was a refreshing change from my fast-paced lifestyle. As someone who has lived life at a hectic pace, my advice to others starting their journey is to embrace, learn, and apply the lessons it brings.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Learn the art of managing multiple tasks at the same time. It can be challenging and exhausting, so it’s important to sometimes take a step back and prioritize. As you navigate through this process, you’ll also gain valuable skills and knowledge. As a lone warrior, it can feel like a lot, but trust me, the rewards are worth it!
