Meet Dairu Ren

We were lucky to catch up with Dairu Ren recently and have shared our conversation below.

Dairu, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I profoundly recognize that self-awareness and acceptance are crucial components of confidence, propelling me more steadfastly along the path of professional development. Simultaneously, I believe that failure is not something to be feared; instead, it serves as an opportunity for learning and growth. Therefore, I maintain the courage to experiment and embrace mistakes, consistently refining my design methods and style. All of these elements collaboratively shape my confidence and self-esteem in the field of fashion design.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I‘m Dairu Ren, a fashion designer based in New York. My expertise lies in knitting, crochet, color, and print design, specializing in crafting unique women’s apparel. I am honored to have my designs recognized in esteemed publications such as CFDA Runway360 and featured in Boston Fashion Week-SS23 Runway shows.

In January 2023, I was awarded the Ones To Watch Award at the Fashion Scout China Film Festival, paving the way for my upcoming showcase at London Fashion Week in September 2023. Born and raised in China, my journey into knitting and crochet began at the age of eleven, deeply influenced by my cultural roots. My work is defined by the reinvention of traditional handicraft techniques, where vibrant colors and three-dimensional textures take center stage.

I recently celebrated a significant achievement by presenting my collection at London Fashion Week 2023. As I embark on a new chapter, I am thrilled to announce the launch of my brand, DAIRU REN. This brand tells a unique and captivating story through meticulously crafted components, aiming to merge the meticulous craftsmanship of slow fashion with avant-garde design. My goal is to strike a harmonious balance between functionality and artistry.

Drawing inspiration from the hand-made production process, I hope to immerse people in my intricate art form. My knitting endeavors have become increasingly imaginative and adventurous as I incorporate various materials and traditional yarns into my designs. I am excited about the creative journey and the opportunity to share my passion with the world.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three pivotal elements stand out: adaptability, creation, and resilience. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances has been crucial in navigating the dynamic landscape of the fashion industry. Cultivating a mindset of adaptability is essential for overcoming challenges and fostering continuous growth. Additionally, a strong creative vision has set me apart in this competitive field. Early-career individuals should nurture their creativity by exploring diverse influences and pushing the boundaries of their comfort zone. Lastly, resilience has been a cornerstone, helping me bounce back from setbacks and persist in the face of challenges. My advice to those starting their journey is to embrace change, cultivate creativity, and view challenges as opportunities for growth. Developing these qualities will not only contribute to personal and professional growth but also position individuals for success in the evolving world of fashion.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to teach me a sense of independence and a constant drive to move forward. I remember my mom once told me never to fear trying new things, to forge ahead, and to never look back. She encouraged me to make choices that I wouldn’t regret in the years to come. This inspiration to be true to myself has been a guiding principle, motivating me as I journey into the future. Their unwavering support and encouragement have been a driving force in my life, empowering me to navigate obstacles and pursue my goals with confidence.
