We were lucky to catch up with Daisy Cleary recently and have shared our conversation below.
Daisy, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Honestly since I was a young girl I have always been hardworking and striven for the absolute best. I knew from the start the goals that I wanted and would accomplish as I got older. I feel like the way I was raised and where I grew up played a major role in that. Growing up on the west side of Detroit Mi, we didn’t live in the best place but I always seen my mom do whatever she needed to do, whether that was going to school, working two jobs, or being present in the house. She kept me and my siblings busy with educational as well as physical activities. In school I was an honor roll student, I took on college course while still in high school through dual enrollment, and made it my duty to apart of educational clubs and extra curricular activities. Seeing how my hard work was paying off in elementary- high school made me want to take a different route and go to college. I am the first college graduate in my family and also the first person to pursue a business. I constantly push myself to the highest limits because I genuinely want the best for myself and the people around me. Although I am always taking on so many responsibilities at once I love to to be productive. Working on things that better my overall well being is what allow me to work so hard and be successful at it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I know that a lot of people identify me with just my business but I am much more. I am currently a special deduction resource teacher along with being in school to get certified in special education. I have a strong passion for children and one day plans to open up my own childcare facility. Juggling education and business has definitely been a journey for me. There are days I am beat down from having a rough day with the kids, having a lot of homework to do, or just simply dealing with the everyday struggles of being an entrepreneur. Although there are tough times, being able to do two of the things I love the most has been nothing short of amazing and a blessing. Constantly taking on new challenges everyday has helped mold me into a stronger person for my business. My communication and discipline has grown so much where I can notice and feel the changes throughout my entrepreneurship journey.
These next few months I am super excited about where I am headed and whats in store for not only myself and my business. Of course I have new inventory to drop, new ideas, new layout, and new content. My business is one of those things where I just try all of my ideas and then I compare and contrast to what works best for my audience. I have been working with a team so that I can now start getting the professional help and resources that I need. I am so proud and excited to share all of the new things in store and continue to build with my audience/supporters.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that has been the most impactful for me on this journey are; discipline, communication, and resources. Discipline is the main quality to have in general but especially in business. I noticed so many changes within my mindset, finances, and quality of my business when I started to have a more strict routine and discipline in those areas needed. Any entrepreneur I encounter with tell me that is the main tip that they have for a long lasting successful business. Of course I am not perfect and I still have my areas of improvement but discipline has made it much easier. Communicating better about the things that I want and need has landed me in the hands/people that I need. When I first started my business I wad very shy and timid to talk to people about anything, Over time I have opened up more and being more adaptive to change and environment has opened many more doors for me. It is not all about what you know but sometimes it is abut who you know. My greatest advice to anyone who is or is trying to get into entrepreneurship is to network. I cannot stress how important networking and having resources is in this field. You could be looking for someone/something and they could be right there willing to help. Go to events, go to pop up shops, and show your face more, especially at major events. I know that it can be hard at times but don’t focus on the dollar amount, focus on building those life-long connections with people are just like you.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth in the past month has been my resilience and my communication. Although I have been through many obstacles in my personal and business life this year, I have learned how to still keep going and enjoy life in the midst of the storm. I would usually shut down when I am overwhelmed for things are not going my way but finding new ways to cope has helped me out tremendously. Learning that just because someone thing is going on in that moment does not mean life ends or you need to take a break, sometimes you have to just keep going. To me starting a business is one of the hardest things one can accomplish and there are days where you may not see it through or want to give up but at the end it is so rewarding. Being able to see the fruits of my labor flourish through my hard work and business is such an amazing journey to watch. I am super thankful for all of the love and support that everyone has for my business. It is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed. Anyone who is looking to join this field, do it for you and do not worry about what others say and their opinions.
