Meet Damian Luis Costa

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Damian Luis Costa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Damian, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I moved from Uruguay 15 years ago and I dedicated the majority of my time in the US working more and more, always chasing the dollar thinking that was the right way to build my future. But once I had my kids, I really found my purpose in life which is when I decided that there has to be a different way and I needed to start doing what I love to do, which is cooking.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am the food truck owner of Nito’s Empanadas that operates in Myrtle Beach, SC. Being a food truck owner is more than just selling food, it’s telling our story through food. What is most exciting about empanadas is most cultures have their own version of one and I get to use my creativity to blend flavors and cultures for everyone to enjoy. I don’t just want to build a brand, I want to build a community.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

From my experience, the most important thing that I did was test my product wherever/whenever I could. I was open to feedback, both positive and negative, and willing to make tweaks and changes. Educating yourself ask much as possible on not only your product but also the skills needed to be a business owner is really important. A great resource is other business owners, networking is so important and you’d be surprised how willing people are to help. Don’t be afraid to ask hard questions because those answers may help you solve big problems.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

I feel that I am always growing as a business owner but the most important has been how I handle unexpected or not ideal situations. Sometimes those situations come from not having enough experience and you have to take it as part of the journey in order to move forward.
