We were lucky to catch up with Damian Redd recently and have shared our conversation below.
Damian, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I’ve always had a decent support system for any activity or project that I have worked on. But, the support typically comes after the work is done. I used to tell people my ideas and they wouldn’t dismiss me, however, they also would not be interested in further discussion. I would then tell myself that the creativity and imagination I possess is not for others. Others can only get behind a finished project. I am one that holds a massive amount of creativity, imagination, as well as the analytical insight on how to bring ideas to fruition, so no need for any outside assistance because without me, nothing will be completed for the world to appreciate.
In 2009, I told my peers that I was going to release a studio album. They questioned how because I was not signed to a label nor a publishing company. Both were true. In the event, I created my own company for both record label releases and music publishing administration. Today, KangaRedd Music has amassed over tens of millions of streams worldwide without any major market affiliations.
Without any formal training, I created my own Integrated Marketing & Public Relations agency, Splash of Honey, that has completed work across the USA as well as other countries. I saw what was needed to market my own works which then led to others contacting my company to inquire about what I could do for them. This also happened when I was working on my second short film, Malign. The lead actor approached me to work with him and his brother on a comedy series after seeing how I worked for my own projects.
With everything that I have ever wanted to do and completed, it has always been authentic because I do it for myself. Living for others or trying to please your peers will only bring disappointment because you can never please other people. People are fickle. But when you stay true to self, your confidence doesn’t falter. When you live for yourself, others will notice and support the person you are because you even have standards that you wouldn’t cross for yourself, let alone another person. As I say in my song ‘Royal Radiance’, “If you ever take a step back and look at yourself/Then you’ll realize that you run your wealth. In the living world where the people ain’t true…take a look in the mirror and be true to you.”
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
There is no one thing that I do. Through my company, Fueled By Redd, I hit quite a few different checkboxes:
– KangaRedd Entertainment is the brand I use for my Music [label & publishing], Film/TV production, and Game development. SYNCHURE is the label under KangaRedd for the collaborative works when others do not have the resources that I do to complete entertainment works. The YouTube shorts series, Jackalope Digital Studios, is co-produced by KangaRedd Productions. New music and short films are in development for 2025 releases.
– Splash of Honey is my Integrated Marketing & Public Relations agency. We have services in Advertising, Public Relations, Branding, and Hybrid Marketing. Our clients have been in various industries, including: healthcare, food, entertainment, and literature.
– DR Photos is the photography venture. I started out capturing indie fashion and lifestyle models before moving more into nature and travel photography. Prints and other merchandise will be sold soon.
– Wear I.T.E.M. is my upcoming clothing label. Will be targeting those who will Wear the Individually, Totally, Expressively, and Modishly designed “items”.
– Petty Heart is an upcoming, uncensored clothing label for adults.
And since I’m an avid traveler and experiencer of life, my blog in September and quarterly magazine will be launching this upcoming fourth quarter based on the “expresses” of my view. Pun intended that you will get later this year.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Philosophy of Self, Discipline over Motivation, and Awareness. If you do not know who you are, do not expect anyone to respect you at all. Motivation does not get the job done. Discipline has completed more than motivation ever will. And lastly, be aware of as much as probable. Do not follow people’s words; watch their actions and your environment at all times. Julius Caesar didn’t.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I actually do not get overwhelmed but notice that a weird amount of people do. Most of it comes from them attempting to please other people instead of themselves. They care too much about another person’s opinion instead of the one that matters most. A lot of people also stretch themselves too thin. Play to your strengths and mind your limits. Everything is not for everyone and that is very much okay. Adding to that, mind your business. Other people’s business is not for you. Focus more on self and watch how life blooms. Dismiss the unnecessary and have less worry.
