We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Damion Saunders a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Damion with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I got my work ethic growing up watching my uncle and grandfather work tirelessly to provide for the family. At seventy years old watching my grandfather work two jobs to make sure we had food, clothes, a roof over our heads. Watching my uncle also work numerous jobs having multiple streams of income. So as a child it was always instilled in me and has carried over into adulthood.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Well to start I’m a 48 year old father of four, two boys and two girls. For the past 8 years I have been a professional dj. I have had the opportunity not only to travel the country but to work with some amazing artist. I’ve had the opportunity to have my mixes played on radio stations. Recently I became the exclusive dj for four artist: Master Kingdom, Tip Vicious, Meteoritah, and the Spare Time Heroes. The cool thing about djing for different artist is the variety of music you are exposed to. Every night is a different vibe and the crowd is what makes it so special. To have a crowd rocking with you getting them amped up to see the artist they came to see is the best feeling in the world. This winter I will be launching my Merch store where you can get all the latest gear from jogger sets, shirts, hats, to seat covers.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most impactful I would say Is being a people person. To be a successful dj you have to be able to read and connect with your crowd. Djing you are catering to all different genres and to be able to look out into a crowd and flip that switch without loosing the crowd speaks volumes. Secondly I would say having a passion for music. For newer Dj’s I would say study your music. Learn the different genres and how they can intertwine and mesh together and study your audience. You may come to a gig with a set playlist and often you will find that you will throw that out the window and dig through your crates to keep the crowd involved.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
For me I would say the biggest area of improvement would be getting myself out there more. Taking gigs I wouldn’t normally take. In order to that I had to get out of my comfort zone. Studying every gig beforehand and knowing what type of crowd im playing for and keeping them engaged. Also getting yourself out there involves branding yourself, believing in yourself, and taking chances.
