Meet Damon Darrell

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Damon Darrell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Damon below.

Hi Damon , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Since transitioning from corporate America into the world of entrepreneurship, I have often wrestled with what many refer to as “imposter syndrome.” While my background is in graphic design and business, I had no formal training in video production—yet I quickly fell in love with the craft of filmmaking.

At my core, I have always been a writer—it’s my God-given talent. I’ve also been blessed with a strong creative vision. Throughout my journey, I have written books, directed films, and built a video production company—all without formal training. Initially, my goal was simply to create films, but I soon discovered a way to bridge the gap between my corporate experience and my creative passions. That realization transformed my career and, in many ways, addressed my struggles with imposter syndrome.

Over time, as I worked with clients and cultivated relationships in the industry, my confidence grew. However, challenges still arise that sometimes cause me to question my abilities. In those moments, I am grateful for the friends, colleagues, and mentors who recognize my work’s value and remind me of my progress.

While external validation is not always necessary, it can be reassuring—especially when it comes from peers who have witnessed and respect your evolution. Internal validation, on the other hand, is a process that takes time to develop. My approach? Embrace your God-given talents. Embrace continuous learning. Embrace change. And most importantly, focus on doing the work to the best of your ability.

For me, creativity is my gift, whether through filmmaking or writing. And I am certain that the creative gifts instilled in me come directly from the Creator—and He is no imposter.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

God. Family. Business. The divine order of my life. From the fast-paced world of corporate America to the ever-evolving landscape of entrepreneurship, my journey has been one of faith, resilience, and purpose. Carving my own path in life has been both challenging and rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunities that have allowed me to create, inspire, and uplift others.

At the heart of my journey is the ultimate gift—creativity. God has not only given me the ability to create but also the vision to see beyond the obvious—to say what others won’t say and bring ideas to life in ways that resonate deeply. For nearly a decade, I have served as the Creative Director of my video production company, Monarch Motion & Media, specializing in stunning visuals and captivating storytelling that help businesses achieve their goals. I still love doing it!

Yet, I knew there was more to be done. My faith has shaped my perspective, and I now understand my true assignment—to use my creative gifts to uplift, educate, and inspire. I couldn’t keep writing the same thing and still be right with God. The work I put into the world must reflect purpose and excellence.

This realization led me to write my latest book, May I Help You? An Insight to Better Customer Service for Black-Owned Businesses. In a time where economic empowerment within the Black community is a growing focus, I recognized a critical gap in customer service—an issue that directly impacts business success. Drawing from my banking background, I understand the financial implications and the impact of exceptional vs. subpar service. With this book, my goal is to break stereotypes and provide Black business owners with practical strategies to elevate their customer service approach and, ultimately, their success.

Creativity is more than a skill—it’s a calling. Whether through film, storytelling, or writing, my purpose remains the same: to create content that glorifies God, strengthens businesses, and inspires people to become the best versions of themselves.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Throughout my journey, three principles that have been paramount to my success are problem-solving, integrity, and embracing change.

1. The Power of Problem-Solving
When I transitioned from banking to video production and marketing, I quickly realized that the skills I developed in banking were just as applicable in my own business. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of listening—truly understanding what a client needs before offering a solution.

In the world of video content, a visually stunning video isn’t enough. I had to go deeper—understanding my clients’ business goals, challenges, and pain points. By doing so, I was able to create content that not only looked great but also drove measurable results. The key takeaway? Just because something looks good doesn’t mean it solves a problem. The sooner you learn that, the more valuable you become.

2. The Value of Integrity
Integrity has been one of the cornerstones of my career. In any industry, but especially in creative fields, your reputation precedes you. People recognize integrity—or the lack of it—and it directly impacts how far you can go.

My mother always told me, “A good name is worth more than gold.” As I’ve navigated the business world, I’ve seen firsthand how true that is. Many industries operate within tight-knit circles, and word travels fast. Having a reputation built on honesty, reliability, and strong ethics can take you further than skill alone. Your talent may open doors, but your integrity determines whether you stay in the room.

3. Embracing Change
The ability to adapt to change is critical for long-term success. Change is inevitable, and those who resist it often get left behind. That doesn’t mean compromising on core values, but it does mean being open to new ideas, technologies, and opportunities.

One of the most significant shifts in our time is the rise of AI and automation. Many industries are in an uproar, fearing these advancements as threats rather than tools. But history has shown us that every wave of innovation—whether automation, digital transformation, or AI—presents opportunities for those who embrace and leverage it. Success doesn’t come from resisting change but from learning how to use it to your advantage.

Ultimately, these three lessons have been the foundation of my journey. Mastering these skills has not only helped me grow my business but has also allowed me to create meaningful, results-driven work that truly makes an impact.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

When reflecting on a book that has profoundly influenced my journey, I would be remiss if I did not mention the Bible, particularly over the past few years. Beyond being a spiritual guide, the Bible is a timeless source of wisdom, inspiration, and practical insights that have shaped my perspective on life, family, and business.

Within its pages, we find God’s redemptive plan for humanity, interwoven with stories of deeply flawed individuals who overcame adversity through His power and grace. The Bible not only instills hope but also provides guidance. If we look closely, it offers a blueprint for personal and professional growth:

Solomon imparts wisdom and business principles.
Moses teaches leadership in the face of adversity.
Daniel exemplifies discipline and unwavering faith.

I truly believe that God has equipped us with everything we need to develop into the individuals He has called us to be. Through both the triumphs and tragedies recorded in scripture, we gain valuable lessons on resilience, faith, and integrity, all principles that are just as relevant today as they were centuries ago.
