Meet Damon Percy

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Damon Percy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Damon, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Keeping creativity alive is one of the most important things at the core of what I do.
There is a spark that fuels so much of my work which comes from knowing how purposeful and necessary my work is. Also, realizing that this is something that I created and uniquely belongs to me. Thinking about the shoulders I stand on in my community and the mentors, my ancestors and all who have poured into me along the way, it keeps me going.
Being a creative requires a ton of energy and there is always a need to refuel to avoid burnout, fatigue and boredom. One of my mantras is never trying to top what I have done, but to find new ways to add upon what I have created. Allowing my imagination to lead me and take me places I would not ordinarily think of stepping into helps.
There are rotating vision boards and lists; I am a list maker and avid post it user, so I begin what a list of things I want to do, (fantasy) can do (reality), and plan to do (currently);
Music keeps my creativity alive, as I do most of my work with it as inspiration; when i feel a lag, i put on music and dance the energy back up.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a man of many hats and 2025 brought much of that into a higher level of focus. I am a creative at heart, community activist and leader, writer and poet, filmmaker, author, I work within organizations that allow me to be my authentic self and help give voice to those who may not have access otherwise to be heard. I champion marginalized communities (LGBTQ, Minorities, Public Health) as a Community Health Worker. My passion is the arts, I have written a collection of poetry, Conversations with Love: A Poetic Journey, which details the positive representation of love between gay black men going against societal stereotypes and creating healthy conversations. One of my biggest joys is being a historian for the community and making sure our stories are shared. I enjoy promoting people and allowing people to shine. I go by “browneyedscribe” and also create promotional press releases for all manner of things. I am working my second book collection and the release of a short film as co-producer “Heaven In Detroit” (slated for November). What is special is that everything I touch is ripe with my authenticity as a person and professional.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three things to always consider when you are on your life’s journey.
Always be willing to learn. Build a strong foundational skill set that will get you into any door then allow that growth and adding up it to move you up and be noticed.
Always stay ready to be resilient. As you grow and go and develop your passions, learn that when one things stops, be ready to walk into that other thing as it starts. Taking time to reassess and reevaluate every stop on your journey is important. It will make you firmer in your choices and chances you take.
Celebrate every little accomplishment along the way. Sometimes we work and work and miss out on those moments that got us there and think “oh, of course” instead of “Yes, I did that” It will make you appreciate yourself and talents more.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents ever did for me was to teach me by example an excellent work ethic, instill in me to never give up even when the world seems against me, and to always bet on myself first.
