We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dan Cox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dan below.
Dan, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
For as long as I can remember I’ve always given myself an “underdog mindset” where I tell myself that nobody is going to believe in me, more than me.
Growing up playing sports in the UK there were always others who were bigger than me, stronger than me, faster than me; but nobody worked as hard as me. When others were hanging out and getting into trouble as kids, I was grinding. This is where I believe my “underdog mindset” comes from and I still carry it with me to this day
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Savage Tacos LLC is a self-built food truck specializing in street food cuisine. This is a fairly long (and painful story) but ultimately Savage Tacos was started from nothing. Unfortunately both Lillian and I lost our jobs back in 2020, and after working so hard, for so long, we decided that we didn’t want to be at the mercy of a large corporation anymore.
So, I sold my car (pretty much the only asset I owned) and bought a completely empty trailer and began to build our food truck, with our own bare hands, from the ground up. We’ve never had a lot of money, so hiring contractors or having a company build it for us was out of the question. But we weren’t going to let the fact that we were poor stop us from chasing our dreams. So we educated ourselves, watched videos, read books and self-taught ourselves the electrical, the plumbing, equipment installation, serving window installation and everything else that you see in our food truck. We are proud that we built it with our own bare hands. Almost three years later, Savage Tacos LLC is officially open for business!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience, Teachable and Humility.
These are the three qualities that I believe were essential to our success so far. Being from a non-wealthy background it’s important to use resources wisely, the ability to self-teach whatever you don’t know, and to remain humble and remember how you got to where you are. When building a food truck, or any business for that matter, it’s essential to do extensive research and teach yourself as much about the industry as possible before entering it.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed I go back to my underdog mindset; nobody ever believed that we would get here, and yet here I stand. Whatever it is that’s overwhelming me in that moment, I know that I’ve overcome worse; so I go back to basics and walk myself through whatever problem I am facing knowing that I already have the skills and ability to conquer it.
