Meet Dan Fox

We were lucky to catch up with Dan Fox recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dan, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?

Surprisingly, it tends to be family and close-friends who are the nay-sayers. I guess that is because they want to shield you from the possibility of failure. And as a performer, you’ll find someone out in the crowd who wants to bring you down as well. But I try to remember why I am playing music in the first place. It’s not because of the attention or the money. It’s because of the joy it brings to connect others with your creativity. It’s like a glimpse of the madness within your soul and mind. And when someone vibes with that energy – you are truly free.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m the guitarist for my group, “The Fox Brother’s Band.” We are a country rock band based here in Salt Lake City, UT. If you have ever seen us before playing live, then you know we are a band that brings everything we got to the stage. We don’t hold anything back in our songwriting. If it sounds good, then it’s probably good! This past summer, we released our first single, “Wouldn’t Change A Thing” on all streaming platforms. Our latest single to be released, “The Devil In Me”, was released on Black Friday. What’s really exciting about this latest single to be released is that we filmed a live music video at one of our favorite venues “Leatherheads Sports Bar & Grill” on Halloween Night. “The Devil In Me” is a song about the temptations and conflict we encounter. It’s truly a special song that I believe a lot of people will relate to. What’s also special about this track is that we had our friend Jonathan Warren from Ian Munsick’s band play the fiddle. The performance he brought on the new single gave it so much character and life! We are so proud to release this song and have everyone enjoy it as much as we do. Our next show will be at Flanker in SLC on December 6th where we will be performing Zach Bryan’s after-party.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Stay relentless. It takes time to develop your own unique style, and it’s not going to come overnight. Being imperfect is perfect. I know this almost doesn’t make sense, but hear me out. The beauty in music is not the perfection of it but the reflection of someone’s imperfection. As a listener, you are taking a glimpse into someone’s soul and madness from within. Show the world what you have to offer! Have fun. If you’re moving and grooving on stage, the audience is going to feel that energy. It’s okay to mess up! Just do it twice and then they know you meant to do that. I got that advice from Eddie Van Halen – who is one of my idols in music.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

Back when I was a kid, my parents took me to Mars Music Store. It’s not around anymore, but it was candy land for me. I was 11 years old when I told my parents that I wanted to play the drums. When we were browsing in the store, I noticed that the drummer starter kits were more expensive than the guitar starter kits. I suddenly felt so guilty asking my parents to invest more money in a craft that may or may not pan out. So we bought a guitar. But my parents buying my first guitar was the most impacting thing for me. Playing the guitar has shaped me into the person I am today. I feel like it’s not just a hobby but an identity of myself.
