We were lucky to catch up with Dan Tanksley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dan, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found purpose once I started working in the environmental field. I saw the need to be part of the change to help create and manage our local ecosystems. I wanted to help combat against climate change and educate future generations of just simple actions can go a long way to making a difference.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner of Rogue Ecology. I and we as a team, help folks in our local area of Oregon create native habitat landscapes and restore areas that have become negatively effected by non-native invasive weed species. We also enhance landscapes that can feed wildlife and pollinators to help the fight of drastic habitat loss in our area. We get absolute excitement from engaging with our community members and other organizations on all these areas, and get a front row seat of environmental progress being made.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
A lot of the knowledge I received was through specialized training in school, but also in the field and learning about restoration first hand. When I first started, it was not easy. I learned I needed to be really flexible, adaptive, and resilient. This all took time, but after awhile it became easier and easier and then it became an addiction.
For folks who are early in their journey, I would recommend not giving up if they are truly passionate of their field. More times than not, you will be tested quite often and run into situations that will make you want to quit. There will always be hard times, but it determine who are on how you come out through the other side. Just hand in there!

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who is just as excited as I/we are in creating native habitat landscapes. I love dealing with people who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the work, and how it will look after all the hard work is completed. I also enjoy clients that are involved with the process. I get gratification from folks who give feedback and show me how enjoyable it all is. It doesn’t get any better than seeing the joy on peoples faces after there is a transformation for the good that happens on their property.
