Meet Dan Walters

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dan Walters. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dan below.

Hi Dan, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I definitely gained a lot of confidence giving presentations and leading workshops. I started to realize my work spoke to people, and they wanted to learn. I realized, too I was very good at explaining photography techniques and how to teach that.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I love photography, especially wildlife and bird photography. Bird photography can be one of the most challenging pursuits. There is a lot of action, and you have to learn to read the behavior of your subjects to capture that image.
The rewarding part of this is teaching beginning photographers what to watch for and how to capture the image.
When they capture that image, it is not only gratifying to them, but also to me. You just helped someone achieve a goal in their photography adventure.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three qualities are practice, perseverance, and getting up early! Wildlife is very active in the morning, especially in summer, before it gets too hot. You also avoid the crowd if doing your photography within the city limits.
Also, do not be intimidated by other photographers who may have bigger lenses or expensive gear. That is just a tool. Your inner vision and knowing your subject is a lot more important.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents have always encouraged my brother and me to chase our dreams. The one thing you do not want to do is live your life with any regrets.
