Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dan Weiss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dan, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from two worlds that both demand consistency and excellence — emergency management and classical music. In both, you can’t fake preparation. You have to put in the hours, pay attention to detail, and work seamlessly as part of a team. Years of responding to crises taught me to stay calm and focused under pressure, while years of performing taught me the value of practice and precision. Together, they shaped a mindset where hard work and reliability aren’t optional — they’re just how I operate.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the Founder and Artistic Director of the Left Coast Quintet, a professional wind ensemble based in San Diego. We specialize in bringing live classical and contemporary music to life at weddings, corporate events, and community concerts — everything from Mozart to movie soundtracks. My favorite part of what I do is creating experiences where people feel the music, whether it’s a couple walking down the aisle to their favorite film theme or a retirement home audience lighting up as we play something nostalgic.
What makes our ensemble special is the versatility and personality we bring to every performance. A wind quintet is a unique blend of instruments — flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon — that can sound like a full orchestra one moment and an intimate jazz combo the next. We love adapting music across genres, arranging everything ourselves so it fits our instruments and the occasion perfectly.
Beyond performing, I take pride in building connections — with event planners, venues, and audiences — and helping people see how live music can completely transform an atmosphere. It’s deeply rewarding to bring live performance into spaces that might otherwise rely on playlists or speakers and to remind people how vibrant, emotional, and human live music can be.
We’ve got some exciting things coming up — a few themed concerts that take audiences “Around the World” through global music traditions, and collaborations with local libraries and arts organizations to make live chamber music more accessible to the community.
At the heart of it all, our mission is simple: to share joy through music and to make every event — big or small — a little more memorable, a little more magical.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Adaptability, collaboration, and consistency:
Adaptability has been essential. In live performance, things rarely go exactly as planned — weather shifts, acoustics change, or a bride decides to walk down the aisle 10 minutes early! Being able to adjust gracefully and still deliver a beautiful performance has been key to building trust and reputation. For anyone starting out, I’d say: learn to go with the flow while keeping your standards high. That balance will carry you far.
Collaboration is at the heart of everything I do. Music is a team effort — within the ensemble, and with event planners, venues, and clients. The most successful projects happen when everyone feels heard and valued. My advice? Build genuine relationships, listen more than you talk, and treat every partnership as long-term, not transactional.
Finally, consistency — showing up prepared, on time, and with a great attitude — is what sustains a creative career. There’s a lot of talent out there, but reliability is what keeps people calling you back. For those early in their journey, don’t underestimate the power of professionalism. Be the person others know they can count on, and your opportunities will keep growing.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! Collaboration is one of the things I value most about working in music and events. The Left Coast Quintet thrives on partnerships that bring live performance into unique spaces and experiences — whether that’s working with event planners, venues, arts organizations, or fellow musicians who share a passion for creating memorable moments.
We love collaborating with wedding and event professionals who want to elevate their clients’ experiences with live music, as well as community organizations and libraries that are looking to make classical and film music accessible to wider audiences.
