We were lucky to catch up with Dana Huwig recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dana, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I feel like there have been different times in my life when my confidence is sky high and then other times where I have struggled dramatically. I can remember being young and growing a lot through sports. I was always active and I loved softball at a young age. I had a lot of natural ability and for that I feel like other kids were naturally drawn to me. As I grew into those tween years I carried a lot of that confidence with me, but those middle school years were tough! That’s the first time I can remember struggling with identity and self-esteem – bullies, hormones and total awkwardness. I gained a great group of friends and found my footing again in high school and felt those high highs. College was similar, but I feel like we ebb and flow a lot as we look for ourselves and discover our real places in the world. I can honestly say that I feel more confident in myself now than I have in a very long time at the age of 44, and a lot of that has to do with fitness. In the past 7 years, I have really discovered my true potential outside of the gym through the confidence that I have gained inside the gym. I also have a partner that is incredibly supportive which just reinforces that who I am is perfectly imperfect and that itself is enough.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My husband, Ian Bowen and I own Chesterton Fit Body Bootcamp, which is a HIRT facility with energy-filled 30-minute workouts. We have an amazing team and have had the opportunity to impact hundreds of people in our community through our love of fitness. It’s a place that is inclusive, non-judgmental, and supportive. We have a passion to inspire fitness and change lives!
My husband and I also own Positive Persistence which focuses on my husband’s journey from paraplegic to marathoner and “Turning Setbacks Into Comebacks.” He is a speaker, podcaster, and success Coach, and we have built this business together for the past 1.5 years.
I also own Team Bowen Wellness which provides GLP1s and other vitamin injections. This is a newer endeavor because I saw a gap in the GLP1 world – people were using these medications but losing muscle and bone density along the way. I felt it was important to teach people to use these as a tool which also incorporating the correct amount of macro-nutrients and strength training to optimize results.
My own personal brand is being developed as well – HAPPINESSunfiltered – and this is a work in progress. You can find me on Instagram @therealdanabowen
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Through all of this I have always strived to maintain my integrity, learn from others (and never be the smartest person in the room), and to lead with love. If you are always looking to up your game, and you do so with integrity and love you can’t go wrong. We tell our kids, “Work hard and be nice to people” and I firmly believe that this is the key to life…you can figure the rest out along the way.
My advice to anyone starting the entrepreneurial journey is to stay true to who you are, listen to your gut, and surround yourself with people who can help you along the way. Get in the room. INVEST in yourself – be smart, but spend money. Take the classes, do the free webinars, make contacts, send DMs…be hungry and humble. You will get there and it will happen for you.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are ALWAYS looking for people to Collab with – we host coaching groups, the podcast, and love to keynote and host workshops. If you know someone who is looking for leadership and coaching we are here for that!
