Meet Dana Mcknight

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dana Mcknight a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dana, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

Growing up in a working-class family, I was taught the importance of hard work and self-reliance from the start. My parents always reminded me, “No one’s going to save you—you have to save yourself.” That mindset drove me to constantly want more for myself, never settling for the bare minimum. I’ve always been driven by this idea of wanting more, so I leaned into that belief. This mentality shaped how I approach every challenge.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

For years, I devoted myself to raising my family with my husband Eric, putting my entrepreneurial dreams on hold. The desire to create something of my own was always there, but like many moms, I played it safe. When our girls were older, I re-entered the workforce as a Key Accounts Sales Rep for a leading apparel brand. I thrived but couldn’t ignore the pull to do more, to build something with my own hands.
As my 50th birthday approached, I realized I couldn’t wait any longer. The fear of regret outweighed the fear of failure. So, I took the leap and opened Magnolia Content Studios—a place where creatives, entrepreneurs, and small businesses can bring their visions to life.
This wasn’t just about launching a business; it was about finally saying yes to a long-held dream. Every day, as I see others bring their creative magic to life in the studio, I’m reminded that taking this leap was worth every bit of fear and uncertainty. It’s proof that it’s never too late to chase your dreams, and sometimes, the biggest risks lead to the most rewarding journeys.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three most impactful qualities in my journey—persistence, adaptability, and connection-building—are deeply tied to my personal story.

Persistence allowed me to reignite my entrepreneurial spark even after years of prioritizing my family. Re-entering the workforce as a Key Account Rep showed me the value of perseverance in pursuing my dreams.

Adaptability helped me navigate the transition from corporate life to business ownership, constantly evolving to meet new challenges.

Connection-building fueled the success of Magnolia Content Studios, where fostering relationships with creatives has been key to growth.

For those just starting their journey, my advice is to surround yourself with people who both challenge and inspire you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or to change direction when necessary. And, most importantly, prioritize collaboration over competition. I preach this all the time—there’s more than enough room for all of us to succeed.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

The person who has been most helpful in helping me overcome challenges and develop essential skills has been my husband, Eric. He’s not only an amazing businessman but also my sounding board. He has this incredible ability to call me out when needed and push me out of my comfort zone like no one else can. His guidance and support have been crucial in my journey.
