We recently connected with Danaia Watson and have shared our conversation below.
Danaia, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
This is a great question. I can honestly say it took a very long time to even know that I had a bit of resilience in me. The start for me was going to college to major in psychology. During my time studying, I realized that I had characteristics of depression. Since then I have been working very hard to manage that. I’m still learning my triggers, but being aware that I have triggers helps me snap out of my depression quicker. I used to be scared of making a mistakes or failing so I worked on facing those fears. Following my heart regardless if anyone else has my back or not. I remind myself it’s me against the word. Affirmations, always help. I am power. I built my success by myself. Also, if you have recordings or picture of your journey, look back on those and remember all that you’ve accomplish to get where you are. I can proudly say I am not able to shift my perspectives, during a negative time, a lot quicker now to see the light. It takes time to learn resilience. Especially if your haven’t had an example to look to growing up. It’s all about self awareness and accountability. Where did I go wrong or what can be improved for the next go round. Nothing in life is a failure, it’s a learning experience. An opportunity to grow. Once you understand/innerstand that, it’s easier to navigate through life’s challenges.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Danaia Watson. I am 29 years young. Also a mother of four. I am a natural haircare specialist/loctician. I initially started my business in 2019. Unfortunately it failed due to covid and other circumstances. From then until April.2023, it has been a difficult time finding work and making ends meet. I felt like I had hit rock bottom and something needed to be done. I have four children to raise something had to change in my life. The only thing that seems to always come back to me no matter what is helping someone do their hair. For a while I was discouraged after my business failed the first time, but I also learned most successful businesses do. I decided to take my income tax money and take a leap of faith to restart my business, Not only did I restart my business, i took another leap of faith buy leasing a salon suite for my clients to come to. Now i am living in a different city from when I first started my business back in 2019, so I literally had to start from scratch with everything including finding clientele. I had people telling me that it wasn’t a good idea and asking me well how are you going to pay for this and that. Which was very discouraging, because certain people in your life you would think they would support you no matter what. I learned that this was my vision that was given to me that maybe is only made for me to see. So one day doordashing, I came across Vivid Salon Suites in Marietta, Ga. This is a year of looking for a salon suite, just when I was about to give up I came across this salon suite building and said if I end up over here again it’s meant to be. So one day I was driving past and got an order right when i passed it, So I had to turn around and go into the plaza where the building is. The rest was history. I knew that was a clear sign from God. I’ve been there 7 months now and my clientele has been increasing, and I also now have a natural haircare line. Most of my clientele are people with locs, but I also do all kinds of natural hair services, from braids to silk presses. My product are made with 100% all natural ingredients. My business promotes self love. Taking care of yourself is major. You are what you attack. You look good, you feel good, you attract good. I always encourage everyone to subscribe to my website. All subscribers get a discount off of their for appointment or purchase. The also get all the exclusives on what’s going on with Luv On Loc’d. Lastly I just love connecting with my supporters, so I love to send out what I call “love letter” to my luvs (supporters), via email. It’s an email that I send our with encouraging things and gratitude for them.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Something that I am working on is consistency. Actually taking the time to finish whatever it is that I’ve started. I used to be quick to hope to something else if I think that what I’m currently working on is not going how I wanted it to go. That goes along with patients, something else I am working on. There’s where faith and my spirituality comes in. I have to trust that the way everything is unfolding is how God wants it to go. Being patient is teaching me to remain humble during my times of success and abundance. Which is not mishandling or mismanaging what you prayed for once you received it. Most important thing is to always practice or study your skill. There is always room for growth.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the last 12 months, my biggest area of growth is me as an overall person. I’ve grown spiritually, as a woman, as a mother and as a entrepreneur. Me becoming closer to God, makes me closer to my divine purpose. Which means I had to grow as an all around person. I now stand up straighter, I’m more confident, I’m more patient, and I learned what is for me will never pass me. Those all benefit you in all titles of your life.
