We recently connected with D’Angelo Caywood “Kwood” and have shared our conversation below.
D’Angelo , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Create something meaningful. Each chance you get! Even if it’s hard work. Even if it challenges you. Because to make something meaningful, takes real effort and that will always push you towards your “best” self. That’s how I keep my creativity alive. Show up, put the work in and never stop trying new things.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
This question is always tricky because I do a lot! Haha. But to jump right into it, i’m a music recording artist, song-writer, sound engineer, social media influencer, content creator & entrepreneur. I’ve even just recently debuted my acting career! The most exciting part about all of it, has to be the ability to do something I love while making an impact on people. When I got into music I wanted to create a foundation built on passion and love for art. As a hip-hop artist from San Diego, I pour my heart and soul into my music; creating tracks that reflect my experiences, thoughts, and the culture around me. Each song is a story, and the love for hip-hop allows me to express myself while also resonating with others. The thrill of sharing my art with the world is what makes this journey truly special.
In the midst of expanding is when I realized what it meant to be a ‘leader’ and started to understand myself even more. I found out that being a true leader isn’t about power, but instead showing people their own power. We just have to get rid of this idea of “perfection”.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel like I can write this answer to my younger self, who at times, felt so vulnerable and skeptical. Just starting out it was difficult to understand what I wanted out of this career, or what exactly I was doing. Those same thoughts led me to turning my ideas into actual plans, and those plans into music or pieces of content. Just NEVER stop taking action on what you believe in. The moment you question your faith, is when you will start to fail.
1. Ambition
2. Discipline
3. Perseverance
You HAVE to be an ambition person to want anything out of life, especially to want it as bad as you need to breathe. Discipline is what gets you out of bed and showing up for yourself. And perseverance is simply the ability to never give up, through anything.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed and need to recharge I tend to disappear from family or friends. It might be the Aquarius in me who constantly detaches from the world, or it might be human nature. I’m still working on myself and it’s a work in progress. I’ll always remind people to just do what works for them, because what works for me; the outcome may look different for somebody else. Each step we take will help us learn to trust ourselves and then we’ll build more momentum from there. Because what will set you apart is the to will to push further on boundaries a lot of other artists are afraid to go. The best strategy is the Kwood method! There’s only more life to live, more money to make and experiences to create!
