We recently connected with Daniel Adkins and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Do your best to ignore it and proceed forward anyway.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I suppose what I do could be summed up into simply being an artist , tarot reader, or content creator and I do all of these things but I don’t really view myself or any of these things as a brand. It’s just who I am. I found a way to start harmonizing my life in a way that was right for me. In a lot of ways I think of myself as a magician but not in a performative sense & not as someone who casts spells or anything like that which tends to come to peoples mind when thinking of magic or magick but as someone who’s aim is to be in alignment with themselves and the elements of life visible & invisible. I aim to harness creativity and energy within myself to experience freedom & expansion. To move through the world autonomously rather than as a slave to my environment and external conditions or limitations.
I guess what I originally set out to do and what my ultimate goal was and is simply to live life creatively & romantically. I want to demonstrate to myself, my son and anyone it may benefit that you can do whatever you want in life even if it’s considered unrealistic or impractical. I want to contribute to life in a way that is meaningful to myself & beneficial to others.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think it started with accepting that I didn’t want a mundane life. I never had the desire to go to school & get a job or whatever. I was a terrible student growing up and got into trouble in a lot of different ways. In adulthood I found I was a terrible employee because I couldn’t invest myself into things I didn’t actually care about. I could never seem to fit the mold of what was expected of me or what would be considered acceptable/ the norm. After utterly destroying my life & being in and out jails & institutions. I actually found a level of peace through it and and rediscovered my relationship with spirituality, philosophy & art. I started to ask myself the right questions and seeking mentors who understood the things I wanted to know. At this time I had become very involved in diy culture hosting events, playing music & creating community gardens. It was in this time 2 things happened. I discovered it was possible to create a whole world by myself & I discovered painting. I used tarot at the time also and long before that even but that didn’t become as relevant until much later.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always open to collaborations but i think if I was actively seeking a collaboration of any kind it would be someone to aid me in the production, promotion & release of the tarot/oracle decks Im creating or opportunities to speak & or show my art.
