Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Daniel Gomez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Daniel, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
It mostly comes from my childhood. My mom and my grandparents talked a lot about discipline when I was growing up, how important it is to be successful in the future and how that will impact me when I grew up. I applied it when I was younger in school and also in different areas of my life like hobbies and fitness.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a professional photographer. I focus on portrait photography and events like weddings and birthday parties. I also have some background in product photography. Photography started like a hobby for me. I have always been interested in different forms of art like drawing, movies, and music. I have enjoyed learning about all those forms of art and practicing them. I learned about anatomy to improve my drawings, learned about angles and composition to make videos, and learned how to play guitar and piano to enjoy my favorite songs in a different way; but, photography was different. I was always interested in photography but I did not have the means to fulfill this hobby until much later in my life. When I started my journey in photography I already new in what field I wanted to focus on, which is Portrait Photography. My best friend helped me do the first photoshoots, to gain experience, gather connections, and to improve in technique and composition. I decided to take it a step further because it was something I enjoyed deeply and seemed appropriate to make it a business of my own. When I had more experience, my girlfriend started helping me by being a model for my photoshoots and assisting me in other photoshoots. She helps me a lot in providing ideas for photoshoots and connections. Some of my late works are a St. Valentines photoshoot which I believe would be a great gift for your partner.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Consistency is the most important thing. It does not matter how good you are at something if you don’t do it constantly.
Composition along with lighting are the most important things for photography. Your camera wont be as impactful as a good source of light, and the composition will be one of the elements that transmit most of the emotions for your photo
Camera settings. Understanding the basics of your camera will take you far. Needless to say that if you do not know how to use your camera, you will not take very good photos.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Impostor syndrome for sure. I like the work I produce, otherwise I won’t be doing it. But it is always in my mind that the client might not like my work. It is always in my head when I deliver an album. However, every time I am feeling this way I remind myself of the work that if done, that the photos that I took are delivering the emotions I tried to portrait, and when the client says that they love the photos helps me get rid of that feeling.
