We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniel Hobbs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniel below.
Hi Daniel , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my mother. Growing up in a Caribbean household, I noticed how dedicated and diligent my family members were from school and to their work careers. But coming from my mother, she made it her duty and business to take me to her job at Newark Liberty International Airport. Anytime that I did not have to go to school, I would spend my days at my mother’s job just watching her work and imitating her style of work. My mother would teach me how to type professionally on a computer, how to write an email, how to file in alphabetical order, how to write my signature when signing off on documentations and etc. All the things, my mother taught me at an early age of 5 years old. My mother also taught me that whenever a task is given to me no matter how little or big, it is best to work on it rather than procrastinate the task and to struggle to submit the task on a tight timeframe. My mother taught me hard work will pay off and will be rewarding regardless if it is a bonus of pay and/or receiving a promotion. However, I am a kid so I equate it to rewards that a kid would enjoy to the utmost enjoyment.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Professionally I am in the photography & videography business. I am an upcoming photographer that reside in the Tristate area taking still and portrait photos. I focus primarily on Portrait Studio, Automotive, and Landscape photography. When it comes to videography, I focus primarily on creating short films for clients in their memorable moments such as Prom, Sport Events, Birthday celebrations, and Graduations. Honestly, the most exciting about this profession is that I am continuously learning in the industry, whether I am learning by myself or if I am learning with my client. I realized that sometimes when things go unplanned it makes the most eye catching product ever made. Another special thing is the reaction from clients from the shots that I take for them. I realize that my talent is to take the “off guard” pictures, which provides an authentic personality to the story that is being told in both type of shots.
As of currently, I am looking for new models to collaborate with that are open to doing creative and authentic photoshoot ideas. I am also looking to create a short film for any actors that are willing to be part of as well. I would like to create the film by the end of this summer.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back I think 3 qualities/skills that was most impactful in my journey was communication, open mindedness and visual storytelling that was most impactful in my. journey. Advice I have for people that are early in their journey is “in order for you to grow and be comfortable is to get uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable, you learn your shortcomings and it will way easier to improve on”
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
The sort of folks that I am looking to collaborate with are openminded individuals that are willing to think outside the box to create mesmerizing photos, regardless if it is in studio or outside in the field. I am also looking for car enthusiasts as well who would like to short films of themselves or their group to expand both of our pro folios.
