Meet Daniel Lopez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniel Lopez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniel below.

Hi Daniel , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

My entire life I have had this internal voice in my head that tells me that no-matter what happens, “it’s going to be okay”.
A lot of it is self confidence. No matter what happens in my life, I trust my ability to figure things out. I don’t think my optimism is necessarily positive optimism. I think it’s more like neutral optimism, but nevertheless it’s enough that it allows me to make hard decisions in my life knowing that I can deal with the consequences.

I grew up in a very real world. I was never sheltered from the adult situations that were happening around me. Whether it was knowing the truth of why my dad wasn’t around or learning why my uncle got almost beat to death over a business deal, the people around me didn’t try to shield me from it. I learned at a very early age that bad things happen.

When bad things happen you typically have 2 people. The people who are going to dwell on it, or the person who is asking “what’s next?”.

As a kid I grew up watching superheroes. I loved the Power Rangers, and Spiderman. I felt like I was the protagonist in every movie and TV show. I had a belief that when tough situations came up I would be the person saving the day. Because of that, I never saw myself as a victim, or a side character waiting on the sidelines for help. I always thought that if there was something to do, I was going to be the best person to do it.

The one characteristic all those characters shared was that they were always going to find a way to make sure everyone was okay. It didn’t matter how hard the circumstances were, they were going to figure something out to overcome the challenge in front of them, and they always did. I wanted to be like them, and while growing up, overcoming challenges became a part of my personality. Even when odds were against me, I knew I would figure it out.

I’m an optimist not because I think good things will always happen, but because I know I can handle the bad things when those happen.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Put very simply, I help business owners sleep better at night. My job is to take care of the legal headaches business owners have to deal with on a consistent basis. What most people don’t realize when starting a business, is that as your business grows, so does the target on your back. A growing business needs to be able to see these coming and act in a way where it’s going to be able to protect itself.

The most exciting part of my job is talking to business owners and startups about their business and learn from their experiences. By doing so, we’ve been able to see the different challenges business owners face as well as their solution. At Empire Business Law, we offer this service called a business strategy session. The point of the strategy session is to dive deep into your business now, and what you want your business to be in the future. Even though our main focus is on the legal side, those conversations often lead to new business ideas to implement for the business owner.

We are learning from businesses everyday and we see what works and what doesn’t. Sharing the message from those experiences with our clients helps them avoid pitfalls and find opportunity.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Delegation. Even though we are still learning how to best do this, delegating work has allowed us to take on more clients and be more efficient.

2. Authenticity. Be professional, but don’t lose yourself in the process. People will want to work with you and you will have a better time. Being able to enjoy what you do and how you do it matters. It’ll give you more longevity than having to fake it.

3. Business development basics. I don’t pretend to know everything about business. In fact I know I definitely don’t know everything. However, every little aspect that I’ve learned through books, coaching services, and other types of resources has definitely helped me look at my business differently which has also allowed me to help my clients.

Advice: Invest in yourself. Make your life about your life and not about chasing things. Have goals, but make sure you know why you have those goals. Don’t just say I want to make the most money possible. That’s most peoples goal. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re just chasing numbers, you can miss out on the parts of your life that bring you joy.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

My mindset. It’s a work in progress and it will always be. This year I’ve been able to regain my confidence. Nothing happened to change my confidence, I was just more intentional in filtering my thoughts and focusing on all the good things in my life than allowing myself to stay trapped in negative thoughts. Don’t get me wrong there are still times where I can spend a week or two in a rut. The difference is, I can usually catch that and ask myself what I’m doing to be in that rut and what I can do to get out. Simple things like exercising or making time to sit by myself can take me out of my funk. I didn’t know the power of those things until this year.
