We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniel Montoute. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniel below.
Daniel, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
My ability to communicate effectively has been shaped by two core influences: my faith and my purpose driven approach to everything I do. Early on, I realized that communication is not just about words but about connection. Whether I am speaking with high end art collectors, community leaders, or someone impacted by homelessness, I strive to ensure that my words carry authenticity, empathy, and clarity.
My upbringing on the island of St. Croix taught me the value of storytelling as a way to build relationships. I learned that people respond to honesty, shared values, and the courage to address difficult topics with hope. As I transitioned into leadership roles, both as an artist and an advocate, I refined this skill further, understanding how to tailor my message for different audiences while staying true to my mission.
Working with reStart Inc. and other organizations that focus on community impact has deepened my appreciation for listening as an essential part of communication. I have learned to approach every interaction with humility, seeking to understand others’ perspectives before offering my own. This approach allows me to build trust and foster collaboration, whether I am coordinating events, pitching a project, or guiding emerging artists in The New Horizons Initiative.
Ultimately, my ability to communicate effectively has grown through practice and a commitment to aligning my words with my actions. Whether I am painting, speaking, or leading, I aim to use communication as a bridge to connect people to the power of art, compassion, and transformation.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an artist and community advocate based in Kansas City, deeply focused on using art as a tool for compassion, connection, and transformation. My work combines vibrant storytelling through painting and community engagement that inspires positive change. I strive to bridge the gap between artistic expression and social impact, making every piece of art a meaningful contribution to the broader conversation about resilience, equity, and hope.
What makes my work special is its commitment to both beauty and purpose. Through initiatives like The New Horizons Initiative, I mentor and equip emerging artists with the skills and platform they need to succeed professionally, while also creating opportunities for their work to make a tangible difference in the community. 35% of the proceeds from the initiative’s exhibitions are donated to reStart Inc., a Kansas City nonprofit that addresses homelessness.
Currently, I am focused on several exciting projects. In August, I will debut my solo exhibition, Living in Tents, at the Shirley Stiles Gallery in Westwood City Hall. This collection, inspired by themes of resilience and housing instability, will be entirely donated to reStart Inc. and auctioned at their Homecoming Auction the following month on September, 11th to support their vital work. Additionally, I am participating in the Entrepreneur of Impact competition, where I hope to secure funding to expand The New Horizons Initiative, including new workshops, artist stipends, and additional resources to support emerging artists.
At the heart of everything I do is the belief that art is not just something to admire but something that can truly change lives. Whether through painting, mentoring, or creating programs that connect people to solutions, my work is a reflection of my faith, values, and commitment to helping others thrive.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful qualities and skills in my journey have been resilience, effective communication, and strategic thinking. These have guided me through challenges, helped me connect with others, and allowed me to grow both as an artist and as a community advocate.
Resilience has been essential in navigating the ups and downs of the creative and nonprofit worlds. I learned to view setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. My faith has been my anchor, reminding me to remain steadfast in my purpose even during difficult times. For anyone just starting, I encourage you to cultivate resilience by focusing on your purpose and by surrounding yourself with people who support and uplift you.
Effective communication has allowed me to share my vision clearly and authentically with diverse audiences, from high end art collectors to community leaders and underserved individuals. It is a skill that you can develop with practice, so my advice is to listen more than you speak, understand your audience, and focus on connecting emotionally with those you communicate with.
Strategic thinking has been critical in turning creative ideas into actionable plans that make an impact. Whether it is developing The New Horizons Initiative, planning exhibitions, or working with reStart Inc., this skill has helped me stay focused on long term goals while balancing immediate needs. For those early in their journey, I recommend taking time to reflect on your goals, breaking them into smaller steps, and consistently assessing progress to stay on track. Seek mentorship from others who have experience in areas you want to grow.
By building these qualities, I have been able to create a career that reflects both my passion for art and my commitment to helping others. My advice is to approach each day with humility, a willingness to learn, and an unwavering belief in the value of your work.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was teach me the value of faith, integrity, and perseverance. My mother has always been my greatest encourager, constantly reminding me to work hard, focus on where I want to go, and trust in God’s guidance in life. She modeled strength and resilience, showing me how to navigate life’s challenges with grace and unwavering determination. Her belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue my passion for art and to use it as a tool to help others.
As for my father, I look to my heavenly Father and the example of Jesus Christ. Jesus showed what it means to live a life of humility, love, and purpose. His teachings guide me to measure success not by wealth or recognition but by the positive impact I have on others. His example inspires me to treat everyone with respect and kindness, living in a way that brings honor to God.
Together, these influences gave me a strong foundation of faith and values that continue to guide everything I do. Through love, sacrifice, and wisdom from my earthly mother and my heavenly Father, I have been given the tools to build a life that reflects these principles. My work, whether it is through The New Horizons Initiative or my art, is a reflection of these values, and I strive to live in a way that glorifies God and inspires others.
