We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniela Burke. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniela below.
Daniela , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is something that delayed the start of my business for probably 2 years. I am learning time and consistency is the most important to have a successful business. It takes time to establish yourself and give your business credibility. So with those two years I spent in limbo and not fully committing is time I could’ve been growing my business. I overcame imposter syndrome by diving into the world of manifestation. It really inspired me to purse my passions and realize that we are the creators of our own reality. I thought about the future and said if I don’t have my own business and follow these aspirations then I am going to be really disappointed in myself when I’m older. “If not now, then when”.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
The funny thing is I really have not been making macrame for that long. In 2020 during covid I was looking for some hobbies to keep me busy at home. I went to Hobby Lobby and found a DIY macrame plant hanger. I really enjoyed macrame it was something that intrigued me: learning all the knots, patterns and so many different styles & designs to create. After that it was nothing more than a hobby and something I would do on the side. I started giving plant hangers to family and friends for holidays and birthday gifts and was getting a lot of positive feedback. I thought hey maybe this is the business I’ve been dreaming of. So I started really casual and just posted a few plant hangers on Facebook and had quite a few people buy some and reach out for custom orders. After that I was thinking I need to go more legit if I am going to do this thing. From there the ball just kept rolling and I was trying to go more and more legit. I have my first big “drop” on October 6th, 2024 where I am releasing 10 one of a kind antler designs. I am super excited to see the response from my followers!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The best advice I can give someone who is starting out on their small business journey is to keep going! The development and growth of your business is not going to change overnight. It takes years of consistently and discipline to be successful. I still have yet to see the full success of all my hard work. BUT I have most definitely come so far since starting this journey and that is something to be proud of. One other piece of advice is comparison is the thief of joy. This is something I constantly remind myself. You cannot compare yourself to others in your same business field. You do not know their story, hardships or how long they have been pursuing it. You only see the highlights and positive outcomes on instagram. Focus on being the most authentic version of yourself and business!
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth in the last year has been my confidence and the ability to not give a f***! Once you stop caring what other people think is when you will start going far. If people are talking about me good or bad I am happy because that’s free advertising baby!
