We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Danielle Bonanno. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Danielle below.
Danielle, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Navigating spaces where I am the only one who looks like me, especially as a transgender woman, has been both a powerful and challenging experience. It has taught me several valuable lessons on how to be effective and successful in various different environments.
First and foremost, confidence and authenticity are key. Embracing my identity and speaking my truth have been crucial. Being genuinely myself not only helps me connect with others more effectively but also educates them about the diversity within the transgender community. It’s an opportunity to challenge preconceived notions and stereotypes, which is vital in promoting understanding and acceptance.
Additionally, being the sole representative of the trans community in a particular setting often comes with a responsibility to educate and advocate for transgender issues. I’ve learned not to be afraid to speak up, share my experiences, and offer insights. My perspective is unique and valuable, and it can lead to more inclusive and informed discussions.
Building allies within these spaces is another important strategy. Seeking out individuals who are open to understanding and supporting my perspective can help create a more inclusive atmosphere. They can also serve as advocates in my absence, furthering the cause of transgender visibility and equality.
Resilience and developing a thick skin are skills I’ve honed over time. Unfortunately, being the only one who looks like me can sometimes lead to bias or ignorance. It’s important to choose battles wisely and, when necessary, stand my ground firmly but diplomatically. While the responsibility of educating others should not fall solely on me, my voice can make a significant difference in breaking down barriers.
Networking and seeking support from the broader community have also been instrumental in my journey. Surrounding myself with friends, mentors, and allies who can provide guidance, understanding, and encouragement has made a substantial difference. Their support bolsters my confidence and provides a safety net in challenging situations.
One important perspective to maintain is that being the only trans person in various settings is an opportunity to celebrate my unique viewpoint. It allows me to contribute something different to the conversation and challenge the status quo. I’ve learned to use it to my advantage and be a trailblazer in those spaces, working to create a more inclusive and accepting environment for everyone.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the Director of Equity and Community Engagementt for Acceptance Recovery Center, where I play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the LGBTQIA2S+ and recovery communities. My work revolves around advocating for those with substance use disorders, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, homeless and low-income populations, and those with complex traumas. It’s a role I find deeply rewarding and fulfilling.
What’s most exciting and special about my work is the opportunity to make a real impact on the lives of individuals who often face systemic barriers and discrimination. Our approach is rooted in trauma-informed and culturally-affirming care, creating a safe and supportive environment for individuals on their recovery journey.
We are continually expanding our outreach, education, and support programs to reach more individuals in need. Our goal is to create a community where identities are validated and affirmed, where everyone can heal and grow, regardless of their background or identity. At Acceptance Recovery Center, we are committed to making a lasting impact in transforming communities and promoting the well-being of marginalized individuals.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In my journey, three qualities have stood out as particularly impactful. First, resilience has been a critical asset. Navigating spaces where I’m often the only person who looks like me, especially as a trans woman, can be challenging. Resilience has enabled me to face adversity, stand firm, and continue moving forward even in the face of discrimination and obstacles. It’s a quality that’s grounded in self-acceptance, self-care, and the support of a strong network.
Advocacy skills have also played a significant role. Being an effective advocate for both myself and my community has allowed me to educate others about the transgender experience and work towards creating more inclusive and accepting spaces. Advocacy involves understanding legal rights and protections, sharing personal stories, and using my voice to bring about change.
Finally, networking and community building have been instrumental. Connecting with like-minded individuals, allies, and mentors has not only provided a safety net but has also been a source of knowledge, support, and opportunities. It’s through these connections that I’ve found encouragement and a sense of belonging, which has been vital in my journey. Developing these qualities, skills, and fostering a strong support network is crucial advice for those who are early in their journey, as it can help them navigate challenges and make a positive impact on their community.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
“The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne has played a significant role in my personal and professional development. One of the most valuable and impactful nuggets of wisdom I’ve gained from this book is the concept of the law of attraction. This idea emphasizes that our thoughts and beliefs have the power to shape our reality. It highlights the importance of maintaining a positive mindset, focusing on our goals, and visualizing the outcomes we desire.
By embracing a positive perspective and believing in the potential for positive change, we can attract the opportunities and circumstances we need to achieve our goals. This knowledge has been a driving force in my journey, motivating me to maintain a positive outlook and focus on the solutions and possibilities rather than dwelling on challenges. It has reinforced the notion that our thoughts and beliefs can significantly impact our lives and our ability to make a positive impact in the world.
