We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Danielle Mancino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Danielle, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Confidence is the key to what we do. Since starting the education side of my business, it’s my goal to bring that out in photographers that I mentor. There are so many photographers out there, it is so important to know exactly who you are and what you bring to the table. Feeling secure in your style and work and not straying from that every time you scroll instagram is what will set you apart.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I always had an interest in creating. When I was 20, I got my first “real” camera. I started taking photos of my niece. I truly never thought anything would become of it. Even after getting a few clients, I never thought it was something that would turn into a business for me. It’s been 15 years and I’m still creating. I’m constantly learning and growing, but something I’m so proud of is, looking back at that girl who never thought anyone would love her work. Flash forward to the photographer I am today – secure and confident in what I bring to the table. I know that 21 year old me would be so proud.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Never give up. your drive and passion for what you do has to beat out defeat every day.
2. Trial and error. You can take all the classes you want, but you need to shoot and fail in order to be able to get it right.
3. You define your style. Pick a style and stay true to it. Don’t change every time there is a fad or you see something beautiful on instagram.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
It’s really just been my husband. We were dating when I started out and he’s always supported me. He’s always the one to push me to buy the new gear, take the coarse, or shoot the session. Just having someone in your corner saying “you’ve got this” is so important.
