We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dannirose☆ a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dannirose☆, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
For the longest time I felt like I couldn’t take myself seriously. The fear of judgement from peers was heavy, especially when I first started and didn’t have a platform at all. However, a risk is worth something you believe in, so I trained myself to stop caring how others perceived me, even if I’m not a massive creator. What matters most is what I think of the person that I am and the things I’m doing. You have to learn that you are deserving of good things and great opportunities. You take things as you go, and it’s always something you adjust to as you grow. If you love what you do and want to share that with people, you belong and deserve a space here!♡
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a 20 year old singer/songwriter from the capital of Washington State! I’m very blessed for the community I have here in Olympia; it’s a huge reason for all the opportunities I have now.
I started singing and writing music at age 11 when I was accepted into a fine arts school. I fell in love with music and performance and spent the last 9 years with vocal coaches improving my skill. I would NOT call myself naturally gifted in anything I do. Music is for everyone and anyone can do it; you just have to put in the work and be patient with growth.
I released my first single, “Dear to You”, in March of 2022. I wrote “DtY” at 17 and it was the first song that stood out to me and made me realize I was really good at this!
Since then, I’ve released a few more singles, as well as my first EP, “NERVOUS”.
As of right now, I may or may not be recording an album..! It’ll be a long process and isn’t prospected to release until late 2025 or even possibly 2026, but don’t worry! I am not going anywhere and will still be releasing music in the meantime, as well as doing live performances around the PNW.
Currently, you can expect to see me in Seattle and Tacoma after the New Year in January 2025 opening for touring artist, Anna Smyrk. Stay tuned and keep up to date with me on my socials for more information on those shows, as well as other TBD events.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
It all boils down to determination. If you really desire something, you will do everything you can to achieve that goal.
It’s a lot of studying, to be honest! Research what other artists in your area and community are doing that’s giving them the success you are striving for, as well as bigger artists you admire, what was their journey? Now, think how you can replicate those elements in a way that’s diverse and authentic to you!
Don’t be afraid to shoot your shot! I message people ALL. THE. TIME. who are much more successful than I am and ask them for advice. You would be surprised by how many responses you get back, even if it takes a week or so.
Learn the game. What I mean by this, is most of the music industry is now appealing to the media. Understand how different social platforms work and what to use them for.
Hint:
-Think of Instagram like your Art Portfolio. This is where people can get an idea of your identity and what to expect from your music. As well as updating your fans and followers with new releases or live performances! This is the place you want to highlight your accomplishments.
-Tiktok is a gold mine for potential fans. You can post as often as you want and it will always push each video to a new audience. Try to be consistent with the content you make so the algorithm can learn the kind of viewers that would like to see your videos. You can do this on Instagram too, but Tiktok is built way better for this mechanic!
Your brand is important and the way you portray yourself matters. You can make amazing music but if your branding is minimal and lacks effort, people are going to assume the same about your music. This isn’t always the case, but as humans, we judge books by their covers, so know that it matters almost as much as the quality of the song.
At the end of the day, stay true to what works for you and don’t try to imitate someone else. Your fans want to get to know YOU, so aim to be authentic. Show your viewers you care.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
The last few years I’ve struggled a lot with anxious tendencies. I think most of it goes back to the discussion about imposter syndrome. I would wonder how I ended up in rooms I have and feel so out of place but those opportunities are gifts and blessings. I know how hard I work so I should know I belong.
I’ve always struggled making conversation with people and somehow it’s as if a light switched in my head and everything is different. It would get so murky in my mind and I’d worry about making a fool of myself everytime I spoke, but that’s not true.
When I stopped consuming those lies about myself, my mind opened up and I’ve started to enjoy my life a lot more!
It’s changed things not only in my personal life, but in my professional world too. I don’t view myself as inferior but as a peer or as a student. There are so many people who want to lift you up and support you in your community, you just can’t be scared to make yourself available.
Don’t be afraid of standing out, YOU BELONG.
