Meet Danny Knapp

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Danny Knapp. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Danny below.

Danny, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

It’s important to maintain general wellness. Creativity is a matter of ‘flow’, and it’s difficult to get in the right state of mind if you’re not taking care of yourself. Personally, I also try to be self-aware and recognize when any given method or environment is becoming to routine or formulaic and then change it up a bit to keep things fresh. Sometimes that means just working on something else or taking a day off to go do something completely unrelated. Other times it might just be reading something interesting or watching a show or movie that inspires a new train of thought. I also love collaborations. Nothing keeps my creativity going more than working with a great team where everyone is being courageous and bringing their own crazy ideas to the table.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a musician. My primary instrument is bass guitar, but I also sing and play a few other instruments as well. I write and perform original music with the L.A.-based band We’re No Gentlemen, but I also perform with several tribute bands and do recording studio session work with other artists as well.

We’re No Gentlemen just finished up production on a couple of new original songs we’ll be releasing in the next few months, and we’re starting to work out the logistics and story line for next music video.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Do your research and due diligence. Always show up prepared. Being prepared as a musician is crucial for success and growth in the industry. Preparation ensures that you can deliver polished performances, whether in rehearsals, recordings, or live shows. Preparedness also builds confidence, allowing you to focus on expression and creativity rather than technicalities. Most importantly, it shows professionalism, making you a reliable and respected collaborator.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and always challenge the assumption that you’ve reached the pinnacle of your abilities. Surround yourself with other talented, intelligent people, and then learn from them. Adopting a mindset of continuous improvement prevents you from becoming complacent. Recognizing that there is always more to learn keeps you humble and motivated, pushing you to explore new ideas and refine your skills.

3. Be flexible. The industry is dynamic and ever-changing. Being adaptable allows you to navigate various musical genres, performance settings, and different styles of collaboration. Flexibility also means being open to new opportunities, whether it’s a last-minute gig, a different musical role, or unexpected changes in a performance. Adaptability will make you stand out as a valuable asset to any team or project.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

Original artists in the music industry today face a major challenge, due to the digital transformation of the market. With streaming services and social media platforms, while there are more avenues for exposure, there is also fierce competition for listener attention. The vast amount of content released daily makes it difficult for unique voices to stand out. Additionally, the shift towards algorithm-driven recommendations often favors already popular tracks, making it harder for new and original artists to gain visibility. Plus, the financial model of streaming services brings in much lower revenue for artists compared to traditional album sales.
