We recently connected with Dante Hancock and have shared our conversation below.
Dante, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Growing up with Epilepsy; which is a disorder that causes seizures, I had days where my confidence was little to none. On most days; having self-esteem was a very challenging task for me.
My disorder caused seizures everyday and the symptoms were noticeable which made me feel like an outcast as I felt that I did not fit in with the normal crowd. Epilepsy spells would cause me to pass out and fall into violent tremors. In some cases I would have to be hospitalized for overnight monitoring.
I suffered through the disorder from ages nine to 16 which are the years a normal child grows, adapts to the outside world and learns who they want to become as an adult.
My upbringing was the complete opposite as my disorder made it difficult to fit in with normal people and experience a routine upbringing. Feeling less adequate than a normal child while also being bullied for a condition I could not control made it very difficult to develop any confidence or self-esteem.
Years after my disorder was cured; I reflected on those traumatic times and used it as motivation. By looking back at what I used to experience and comparing it to the goals I’ve achieved; I am always proud of with how far I have come.
That mindset helped me build confidence and even to this day; I am always proud of the battles I endured and ultimately won.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a Personal Trainer & Boxing Fitness Coach where I help others stay motivated in reaching their fitness goals. The mindset I carry when it comes to helping others is “quality over quantity”.
The quality of each session matters way more than the amount of sessions I have with any client.
When it comes to the Boxing part of my fitness training; I teach clients the proper way to execute each movement which is imperative to building confidence and most importantly, preventing injury.
Aside from Fitness & Boxing; I am a self-taught Piano player which helped me understand the importance of staying patient as patience is a vital aspect of being a Boxer and Personal trainer.
I recently started offering group Boxing fitness classes in the Duluth area. I will soon be producing my own clothing for Fashion and Fitness uses.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learning an instrument, always believing in myself and being approachable are three areas that have helped me make in impact whether it is for myself or another person.
Being a self-taught Piano player improved my critical thinking skills which allows me to better understand each of my clients and find what works best for them in their Fitness goals.
Self-Belief was my biggest flaw growing up as my Epilepsy caused a lot of self-guilt. Once my disorder was cured; through self talks, counseling and reassuring myself; I was able to become more confident in my image and decisions made.
Approachability is very underrated as it is the deciding factor between clients wanting your service or finding someone else. I am a firm believer in looking for commonalities with each of my clients because it leaves that long lasting impression which helps improve the chances of client returning.
From my experience and new things I am learning each day; there is a mindset I always stay true to……
“Listen before you respond and have the information to enforce your response.”
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I thank my wife Melanie Hancock for helping me build the courage to pursue my dreams and passion in becoming a Personal Trainer.
Born and raised in the busy city of Las Vegas; my wife grew up in an environment where staying busy and finding new ways to achieve your goals was routine as Vegas is the city where many entrepreneurs and business minded individuals move to in order to get their name out.
My wife is also a business owner and runs a media company which helps me regarding editing and graphic production.
Her knowledge and skill in film gives me even more motivation to keep striving for more each day.
My wife gives me the confidence to take that leap and don’t be afraid of failing.
