We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darce Leone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darce, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Gratitude. Most people either don’t have the resources or the confidence to pursue their wildest dreams.
I’m the small amount of people that live in one of the greatest areas in the world, be surrounded by art, and have the means to pursue music.
I never want to take this for granted.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
learn more about you, your story and what you are focused on professionally
Since late 2023, I’ve began my journey into music with DJ-ing and music production. I’ve always gravitated towards deep 808 and fast hitting drums. I’ve grown up in the 2000’s with the exposure to all sorts of music from trance, metal, hip-hop, RNB, and more. Throughout my journey, I’ve been able to blend my taste to feed listeners.
I’ve always been shy in front of people. However, DJ-ing has allowed me to not only perform but develop a relationship with the audience to get them to not just dance, but to feel free.
Since the start of this year, I have had the privilege of developing relationships with multiple collectives such as 3 AM Playground, Groov-ism, Refuze Events, EMX.LA, and more. While I will continue to DJ in LA, I am expanding to play in OC and hopefully San Diego by the end of this year.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My top 3 qualities that have pushed my career are:
1. Punctuality.
2. Consistency.
3. Open ears.
Being consistent and punctual is half of the battle. While my skillsets are important, I’ve been hired and brought back because of my punctuality and consistency. I show up early, ask the promoters important questions in advance, I allocate plenty of time to prepare my sets. Punctuality and consistency is not just work ethic, it’s being considerate.
My last quality is open ears. I’ve always been exposed to different music and cultures. I’ve always had my hand on the pulse in different genres to know what people want. What people are missing.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Asking for help.
For example, I’ve had an issue with mixing in key. Since I have not had to worry about music theory after high school, that presented an issue for me. That issue had reflected in my sets.
However, I’d ask different DJs about what they do. Each answer (assuming they did mix in key) did not disappoint and presented a new perspective. Not only did different people have different systems to mix in key, but they each had different situations for when it would apply.
In the little time that I used 2 different systems, it has helped me make better decisions on the decks to provide a better set.
