Meet Dareel Sco

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dareel Sco. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dareel below.

Hi Dareel, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I’ve learned it to be effective in many different ways throughout my everyday life.
I am a musician that meets like minded people on the regular. They look a lot different than me at times. Being an American in my type of skin you have to learn an effective way to succeed without being discouraged by judgments of others. Being a rapper with a positive message is tough at times because if I say I’m a rapper they tend to bat an eye or two.
So, I learned to just remain calm. I actually give my self a couple of seconds to process when I’m feeling discouraged by their judgments.
Calmness gives me the time I need to remember my purpose.
I’m also a UPS driver. I deliver day to day to a predominantly upper class area full of people who don’t look like me. People say and do a lot of discouraging things but most are kind. One time I had to deliver medication to a person but I knew he didn’t like people like me and he made it clear. Moments like that made me realize that I have to stay calm and remember my purpose which was to deliver that package regardless of discouragement. At work my purpose is to deliver parcels. Off work my purpose is LUVFIRST THE MOVEMENT.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

At this point of my life i don’t have much more to show. I used to make music and entertain for attention only. Now, I only make music and entertain people who are making LUVFIRST THE MOVEMENT a reality. I choose to entertain a community thats willing to build together. We have an annual fish fry. The community comes out and purchase plates. Their contributions turn in to a live concert right on their home turf. We just finished hosting our 4th annual LUVFIRST EXPERIENCE concert featuring Latin artist Friday Love and a GoGo Band named Da ReSet band. The year before at the 3rd annual concert we hosted 100 Poof GoGo band so future is bright. Communities are the reason. We’ve been spreading so much positivity throughout Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. When LUVFIRST THE MOVEMENT shows up people know what we are about before we can speak. We make sure our merchandise says it loud and clear everywhere we go.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Learn to love yourself. Make sophisticated choices. Tell yourself the truth. Those are three qualities that impacted my journey most.
Learning to love myself was extremely difficult. I started to doubt myself often as if I was not good enough. In the beginning of starting to love myself I decided to start researching about self motivation. I think we all need that little push from ourselves. You can learn it by really appreciating how far you’ve made it in life. Not monetary but years, hours, time. That alone should spark a reaction to continue. All we as people need to see is a little improvement In whatever we are doing for ourselves and it makes us want to do better.
Making sophisticated choices is a very important quality that I have learned as well. Be knowledgeable about your decisions. Know the pros and the cons before you make a choice. what separates the growing person from a person that is stagnant? The knowledge. Sophisticate your moves more often.
In order to make sophisticated choices I first had to learn to be honest with myself about everything. Emotionally and physically. Everyone hates to look in the mirror and say “I need to loose some pounds” but it’s important that you at least keep it real to yourself. Then you can start making sophisticated choices in making positive changes toward loving yourself in the process.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

A book Called as “As A Man Thinketh” by James Allen has been a great read. I haven’t finished it yet but 4 chapters read and I’m already feeling the impact. James Allen writes about how a man’s thoughts makes his reality. Consciously controlling thoughts to shape reality and destiny. Seems really interesting so far.
