We recently connected with Dari Litchman and have shared our conversation below.
Dari, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity is the most innate part of me. I am 110% visually stimulated and I soak it all in. I am constantly inspired – a lady walking down the street wearing a wacky outfit, the silver underside of leaves showing before a storm, a vintage Christmas window display, a walk down the aisle at my favorite thrift store, a gorgeous pot of vegetable soup. To keep it alive I look at a LOT of visual information – YouTube videos, Pinterest, and Instagram. I am always following fantastic artists and watching endless DIY videos.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The Craft Salon was a natural progression into the world of art instruction for me. I love sharing my knowledge and I also love kids. The marriage has been a perfect storm! I spent years working with kids in many different capacities. When I took the chance on a space it was all uphill from there. Not to say there weren’t bumps in the road – I signed my first least right before Covid hit. Opening my business was a very slow process. I really think that because it happened so slowly it allowed me to really figure everything out about how to run it while on the job. I also really love teaching adults. I am working towards more and more adult classes, workshops and retreats. Working with my community and offering after school for kids is my bread and butter so I would definitely not change a thing! I strive to design projects that are fun, educational and always elevated. We do not do run of the mill arts and crafts projects. I rely on my multi-faceted art background to inspire and guide me through my work life.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One is identifying a need in your community. I knew that parents need and want art enrichment for their kids. Make sure that you always give back in some way. I always partner with the local schools to make sure to help them with their specific needs – setting up a craft table at a school event, donating auction items, etc. And always help out someone who is in need. I always make sure to have scholarships available for kids who need them.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
We finalized and implemented our ceramics program. We put in a kiln and wheels and I brought in an amazing ceramics instructor. This program has been the icing on the cake! We are running a robust ceramics after school program and our newly launched adult classes sold out in days. We are continuing to build on this program with much excitement!
