We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daria Makohonova. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daria below.
Hi Daria, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
If I were to be completely honest, I would have to admit that photography originally started just as a hobby for me and a way to earn some pocket money. Back in 2014, when I got my first camera, I never imagined that photography would become such an inseparable part of my life. But just two years later, after countless experiments, mistakes, learning, taking in criticism, and receiving joyful feedback, I realized that this hobby had turned into something that brought me immense joy and fulfillment. Over time, I came to believe that every person is beautiful in their own way, and with my unique perspective on beauty, I could share that vision with the world around me. Today, I can’t imagine my life without interacting with clients, going on photoshoots, hearing their stories, and of course, seeing the joyful smiles when they see themselves through my eyes. Isn’t that what true calling feels like?
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a family photographer, I’m currently focusing on a new service that I’m truly passionate about: Home Studio Photoshoots. What’s the idea behind it? This service is designed to be as convenient as possible for families with young children, large families, or simply busy moms. To explain what I offer my clients, let me start with a simple question: How does the typical photoshoot preparation look? Usually, it’s the mom who handles everything—she chooses the photographer, coordinates outfits, and makes sure everything is ready. On the day of the shoot, she dresses herself, gets the kids and husband ready, does her hair and makeup (or goes to a specialist), and finally, she arrives at the location. Only then can she trust the photographer to take over and capture her family.
But imagine if you didn’t have to go anywhere. No more worrying about packing extra outfits, shoes, snacks, or tissues. No need to ask your husband for extra time to travel, attend the photoshoot, and then drive back home. All of that becomes unnecessary if the photographer comes to you. And that’s exactly where my unique offering comes in. Whether it’s a cozy shoot by the fireplace, on the sofa, or anywhere else in your beautiful home, I can easily set up a professional photo studio right there in your living space—even with just a little extra room. Family portraits on canvas, minimalist shots with clean, solid backgrounds, and stunning lighting that feels like you’re in a high-end studio—this is all possible in the comfort of your own home!
I truly believe that by saving you time and creating amazing photos, I’ll make you twice as happy.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important aspect of my work, I believe, is the deep psychological skills I’ve developed over the years. In my 10 years of experience as a photographer, I’ve learned to truly sense the emotions, states, and feelings of my clients and the people around me. In the first few minutes of a photoshoot, I can usually establish a strong connection with my clients, understand what they want, and intuitively sense how they feel in those specific moments. This allows me to capture more of their personality through my photography.
Another crucial skill I value today is my ability to work with light. Lighting is something that always requires refining, updating, and constant learning. I make it a priority to continuously expand my knowledge and bring fresh elements into my work. Whether it’s working with continuous light, strobe lighting, mixed lighting, gobos, or various light modifiers, mastering light is an ongoing journey, and it’s essential to know how to manipulate all these elements to create the perfect shot.
Third, I would say that adaptability is one of the most important skills I’ve developed. Unfortunately, the creative path—and life in general—is always changing. You might need to relocate, change your field of work, or shift your creative style. But the key is always knowing how to apply your existing skills and knowledge to new challenges. In the past five years, my life has undergone significant changes: the temporary closure of my business, moving twice, searching for new shooting locations, and working with new client categories. All of these phases were accompanied by considerable stress, but it was my adaptability that made me who I am today—and I’m still growing and evolving.
To anyone starting out on their journey, I would wish patience, self-belief, and good people around you—people who will believe in you more than you believe in yourself and support you at every step of the way. It doesn’t matter if it’s just one person or a whole group; what’s important is that you’re not alone in your passion. During times of crisis, you’ll always have someone to lean on.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Since I am new to the United States, I am eager to meet new people and establish connections. It would be especially exciting to connect with someone from the creative field or a related area. I have many ideas in mind, such as participating in photo exhibitions, creating galleries, setting up a photography studio or an art space for both adults and children, or even offering simple photo retouching services.
If you are a creative individual and are interested in any of the above, feel free to reach out to me via email. I am always open to dialogue and mutually beneficial collaborations.
My experience spans a wide range of photography, from capturing family moments during love stories and weddings to shooting children with their families. For two years, I worked as the lead photographer for a modeling school, organizing and conducting photo shoots for large groups of children (around 50 participants) aged 4 to 18. Additionally, I worked as a content creator and photographer for a chain of shoe stores in Dnipro, Ukraine, for 1.5 years. Given my diverse experience across various photography domains, I am confident that I have something valuable to offer you.
