We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daria Matiunina. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daria below.
Hi Daria, thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?
I would like to say that this is definitely not the final point where I am now. I am sure that empathy can develop indefinitely and become deeper, wider and better. But over the past 10 years, I’ve definitely made giant leaps in this regard. I am convinced that empathy for other people depends on how close you are to yourself. Therefore, studying myself, my way of life, my character, what I love, what I think about, what I build my life on, and so on. This is the main state that leads to that very immense empathy. This is the main state that leads to that very immense empathy. Because there are no barriers inside and you can learn all people with interest, and all perception receptors are clear to feel the person standing next to you.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
For the last 6 years I have been working as a professional makeup artist. It can be said that this is not so much, but for me it is a huge path from a girlish hobby to global projects of an international level with such brands as D&G, DYSON, Steve Madden, Max Mara, Schwarzkopf and so on. Publications in VOGUE, Esquire, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, and many more. But what was the main discovery for me when I moved to live in Los Angeles and started working in Hollywood? This is something that does not matter to me at all in how many magazines I have been published in, with how many brands I have worked with. The only thing that matters to me is how I build relationships with people, who I am as a friend, who I am as a woman, and cool projects are a nice bonus of an honest life. Of course, all of the above does not negate the fact that the path to professionalism is a huge daily work, practice, research in the field of my profession, non-stop learning and my valuable time.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience. A realistic view of yourself as a professional. Perseverance and constancy in movements.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am overwhelmed I always ask myself one question. Do i everywhere get enough energy in return compared to what I put in. And I notice that somewhere I agreed to a project that was not as interesting to me as I would like, somewhere I worked with a client that initially did not cause me pleasant feelings, but I agreed anyway. It also happens that the rate does not correspond to the declared amount of work. I never have any complaints about the circumstances. There is only responsibility for your choice. And then honestly asking myself why I made this or that choice, quite understandable answers come. And then you can move forward with updated internal settings. And of course, going hiking or spending time by the ocean is what restores me when I’m overwhelmed.
