We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darius White. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darius below.
Darius, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from the desire to have a positive impact on the world around me. It inspires me to stay optimistic when the things I share have a positive effect on others. It reminds me to stay lighthearted. By sharing my art, meeting others, and expressing my thoughts and feelings, I can make a person’s day better. And that fills my purpose. My optimism comes from my friends and supporters who remind me that I am not alone and that they’ll be there for me no matter what. My optimism comes from the uncertainty of life, that a new opportunity is just ahead and we do not know it yet. I have faith in the higher power that my life will be cared for accordingly. I just want to make sure to do my part.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am currently working on my Master’s Degree at Towson University for Global Humanities. Thankfully, I secured a graduate assistantship that will pay for my tuition and provide a stipend. The position is assisting in the production of the American Society for Irish Medieval Studies’ academic journal Eolas. I am also a tutor at the University’s writing center. I love helping other students achieve their goals. There is a lot of anxiety involved with writing so, I feel honored to help ease people’s worries. Artistically, I am working on my next music project after releasing “The Domino Hills Tape, Vol. 1” at the beginning of Summer 2024. I have a lot of songs written down but, I am taking my time to record each track so that I do not get overwhelmed with the premise of recording a whole album/mixtape. I am also balancing this with pro wrestling training at Maryland Championship Wrestling (MCW). I have always been a fan of pro wrestling, liked performing, and I have an athletic background so, I am trying it out to see if it’s something I’d like to do long term. It is interesting being behind the scenes in the industry in contrast to just a fan but, I am enjoying all the bumps and bruises so far.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Having peers and mentors in whatever industry you are in is important. Having people to ask questions to and listening to their experiences helped me foresee different issues that may come about in the future. It is also important to be kind and personable. It can be nerve-racking at new events and places but talking to other people and introducing yourself to strangers can help alleviate the burnout associated with being a performer. Learning to be vulnerable is also important. Putting on a front of always being happy can be detrimental to your mental health. Also, being so fearful to post anything on social media because of judgement can limit yourself from making certain connections. I’ve made many meaningful connections by talking about my personal struggles and I feel a sense of community around me now that my following knows me on a more personal level.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Resilience has been my greatest area of improvement. I used to struggle with self-isolation and dissociation whenever I felt overwhelmed but, I have shown perseverance this year. I just recently was rear ended and got my car totaled and I handled it way better than I thought I would have because I knew I had the help of my parents. I am extremely grateful to have certain peace of mind on things like that. Perfectionist thoughts can sometimes be detrimental because life is never going to be perfect. So, having the resilience and flexibility to adjust your timelines and workflow processes based on each situation is important. My fight, flight, or freeze response has been tested but I am doing more fighting this year rather than the latter two.
