We were lucky to catch up with Darren Southern Plug Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Darren Southern with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
As a child as early as 6 my grandfather taught me that the only way to have something was to work for it. As the owner of a plantation in rural SC and a trucking company he always put me to work. This is where my work ethic comes from. My gandapa was my super hero and he accomplished and acquired alot in life and I wanted to be just like him when I grew up!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Darren James-Brown Sr, mostly known as Darren Southern Plug Brown. In 2015 I started Southern Plug Magazine in Columbia SC. Giving voice and spotlight to hundreds of independent entertainers that may have otherwise gone unnoticed! The market I started out in was known at the time as a non factor in mainstream hip hop and all music alike. Figures like myself and many others which are too many to name has done alot to advance the music footprint of SC! With events like our upcoming Metro Music Awards we have highlighted and honored hundreds of SC entertainers.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Many magazines require teams of writers, designers, marketers, webmaster, and more. With Southern Plug I am proficienct in all of the above. I create the image of the brand from my mind and hands alone. Although my most profitable and valued skill would have to be my people skills. My ability to get to know anyone. Also learning what they need that I can add to their situation has allowed me to foster deals and connect with prominent individuals and help build our brands as a collective.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The number one book to play a role in our development is a magazine like us. When starting out the biggest entertainment public coming out of my hometown was “The Niche Carolina Magazine”. I idolized their founder Shera Bass and spent my career mimicking her. As to me she was the goat! I still read the Niche to this day digitally. And, I’m still inspired everytime I do.
