Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Darryl “DJ DLIFE” Payne. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Darryl “DJ DLIFE”, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
From a very young age I’ve had a keen interest in music/DJing/entertainment. My introduction came from my late uncle Desmond James in the early 80’s. He was a music fixture in the Brooklyn New York area and he would take me along on most of his gigs. His extensive vinyl collections was also part of my motivation.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My passion for entertainment is embedded in me. Introduction to the TV aspects came about during the pandemic when like everyone else I was stuck in the house and was looking at ways to take what I knew from radio djing and incorporating it into visuals. This lead to the creation of “FUSION”, my weekly televised talk entertainment variety show which airs on Synergy Tv. The exciting part about this for me is that it’s something that I’m able to put my full creative touch from Director to Editor. I am very hands on. I really enjoy editing. Watching an episode come to life and knowing I’m responsible for this and seeing people enjoying the work or someone seeing me and saying “I really enjoyed your show” brings a level of gratification and humility. Being able to read and or assess and please the crowd is something I truly don’t take for granted. Something that I’m truly proud of was having my brand (DJ DLIFE) trademarked. This was a DIY project also accomplished during the pandemic.
My branded merchandise can be found on my website www.dlifemusic.com. Apart from Fusion I also have two other shows “I Love Soca with Energy” which is syndicated on Synergy TV, SoundChat Radio and EPlus TV and airs live on Saturdays 2pm to 6pm est also “D Hump Day Soca Wednesday Show” Wednesday nights 11pm to 1am est on SoundChat Radio.
Another passion comes under my Production Manager role where I’m responsible for the production of a few notable events around the globe year round including Miami Carnival which will be celebrating it’s 40th anniversary in 2024 Columbus Weekend. Also De 268 Breakfast Fete at Antigua Carnival held in early August just to name a few.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me those three qualities would be staying humble, always willing to learn and staying away from gossip. My advice to anyone would be to look at these qualities and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, ignore the noise.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. One of many valuable nuggets for me is learning to view situations with an open mind set and learning that things are not always what they might seem. Everyone sees things differently and being able to understand and accept that puts you in a better space. Another is identifying your cycle and levels of priorities.
