We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darryl Evan Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darryl Evan, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My faith in Jesus Christ. No matter how you look at him, you have to recognize and celebrate his tenacity, sense of purpose and resilience – regardless of outcomes and circumstances.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a musician – a flutist. Although my music can be found in the halls of Smooth Jazz, I prefer to call my style Instrumental Soul. You know almost from the first note when you’re hearing my music. I venture to touch my listeners’ souls and want them to feel something, something special. Since I liken instrumental music in general to reading a novel, I want the imagery a listener gets to be unique, thought provoking and a delight to the senses. What’s most exciting is being afforded the opportunity to affect such a large swath of people in such a positive way. Being told how your playing touched someone’s soul is so fulfilling. Living the purpose you believe God placed you on the planet for is simply priceless. I believe I’ve achieved all of that – especially with my 4th studio album, “Resilient”.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Faith, talent and tenacity have been most necessary and impactful on my journey. My faith in Jesus Christ and that God commissioned me to be a musician, fuel everything I do. That fuel helps to diminish the viability of any options to quit. After all, how can I quit on a mission God assigned to me?
Regardless of what stage of a journey anyone may be in, the best advice I could give would be to hold tight to the three qualities I mentioned. In addition, remain flexible. Don’t give up on your dream, but allow the journey to provide paths you may not have previously charted. And continue to improve. Life is a great classroom. Never stop learning. Learn your craft. Learn your industry. Learn yourself. Being boldly honest with yourself about yourself will strengthen you in ways that are sure to prove invaluable.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Bible and “Think and Grow Rich” are the books that have played – and continue to play extremely important roles in my development. The Holy Bible is the center of my life and faith. Countless faith and life lessons are found within its pages. One of the most inspiring parts is understanding how extremely flawed and ordinary people were able to achieve great feats through their faith in God. Reading about God’s love and compassion guides me in how to deal with people in various situations. Missteps of people like King David, Job and the Apostle Peter are clearly on display. Yet, despite those errors they’re still able to navigate their journeys by relying on God’s help. Even Jesus, who had no error still had to rely on God for strength in achieving his mission.
Napolean Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” (which I read at around age 15), provides so many impactful nuggets – like recognizing opportunity where others only see calamity, the encouragement to persevere as in “3 Feet From Gold”, and so many others.
In both The Bible and “Think and Grow Rich”, one can clearly glean that when you understand your purpose quitting is never a viable option. One of the beauties of reading the right materials is that it imparts knowledge, and knowledge really is power. It’s a power you’ve gained that cannot be taken from you, regardless of your circumstances.
Everything comes down to mindset – what someone believes is possible and their willingness to work for it.
