Meet Darryl Girard

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darryl Girard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Darryl, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

As the oldest of three boys, I was introduced to work at an early age with many home chores. Fresh out of high school, I actually lived in my car (I even had a room-mate LOL) for a season. This taught me about survival skills. It was also around this time when someone gave me a cassette of motivational lectures from Zig Ziglar and Napolean Hill.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

For several decades my music career consisted of teaching private piano and guitar lessons, writing/producing local jingles, church music director, and recording other local artists in my home studio. Several years ago, I decided to quit my position as a church music director as well as retire from recording other people’s projects. The hope is to build my own catalog of original songs as a songwriter/publisher. In addition to the inherent challenges of those activities, it has also been very challenging learning and navigating the music industry with the ever-changing technology and platforms. Another challenge is that my musical taste is extremely eclectic which makes it quite difficult to clarify my style or “brand”. However, I’m considering the possibility of focusing on feel good music like pop EDM, pop-funk, and pop-jazz in 2025. Although I have sang on some of my productions, I have been fortunate to have some very excellent singers on my others. A few career highlights over the past several years included winning a TELLY award for my first music video ‘Raindrops’ and making a Top Ten list on a radio station for my song ‘Bright Sunny Day’ in Australia. Those glimmers of hope tell me that maybe I’m not crazy when reaching for big dreams in my little home studio. Receiving royalty payments each quarter from music libraries is also encouraging.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three most important skills I’ve acquired are learning music theory in college, learning to play several instruments, and a strong effort to stay on the cutting edge with learning new studio equipment. My advice to newbies would be to always stay open minded in learning anything and everything you can via resources like formal education, online forums, trade magazines/books, and conversations with experts who are willing to share advice.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

As many of my songs are a natural fit for dancing, it would thrill me to network with dancers who would like to collaborate in creating music videos featuring their dance skills and talent. Some of the most exhilarating memories were when I performed some of my originals in public and people in the venue would get up and start dancing. It would also be great to meet and work with people who are more advanced than I am with the videography and post editing for music videos. People can reach me at www.DarrylGirardMusic.com/contact.
