Meet Darryl Gordon

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Darryl Gordon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Darryl, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I used to be this shy and self-doubting person, always sticking to what I knew and rarely daring to venture outside my comfort zone. But one day, I decided enough was enough. It was time to shake things up and embrace a whole new me.

I started by trying new things. I went on a youth exchange student to another country with a group of students I had never met before. And you know what? I surprised myself with the friendships that I made. Who would have thought? That small victory gave me a taste of what I was capable of, and it fueled my desire to explore further.

So, I pushed myself even more. I took up public speaking and getting involved in a non-profit organization that gave me leadership opportunities, despite my trembling knees and shaky voice. Guess what? I didn’t ace it on the first try, but that didn’t matter. The mere act of facing my fears head-on and stepping out of my comfort zone gave me a surge of confidence I had never experienced before.

But it wasn’t just about trying new things; it was also about being a kind human being. I realized that by lifting others up and spreading positivity, I was actually boosting my own self-esteem. Whether it was lending a helping hand, listening to someone’s struggles, or simply flashing a genuine smile, the impact I made on others gave me a sense of purpose and a feeling of self-worth.

My advice would be, if you want to develop your confidence and self-esteem, take a leap of faith and dive into the unknown. Embrace the discomfort, challenge yourself, and don’t forget to sprinkle kindness wherever you go. Trust me, you’ll be amazed at the person you’ll become and the heights you’ll reach.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been a marketing professional for 25+ years – while I started my career on the public relations side, and then switched to graphic design, it was the digital transformation that really intrigued me. After producing three Super Bowl spots, and having spent millions on each one, the concept of creating digital content that was targeted and relevant, really sparked my career.

While I don’t expect to make another Super Bowl spot again, being able to easily create content and immediately run the Analytics on a campaign, has changed the way that I market a product and service.

I do this for the company that I work for as I market our award-winning software platform, and I apply the same principles to my Instagram account.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that I focus on are: Integrity, Empathy and Resilience. These three qualities may not work for everyone, and different individuals may prioritize other qualities based on their values, cultural background, and personal experiences.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
In 1999, I read a book called Permission Marketing by Seth Godin. The concept is asking for and respecting a customer’s explicit consent when sending marketing information. It respects people’s privacy, by being more friendly and less pushy. The book is old now but is an easy (short) read, but the principle is even more relevant today than when Seth wrote them in ’99. In particular, read chapter 8: Everything You Know About Marketing And The Web Is Wrong.
