We were lucky to catch up with Darryl Murphy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darryl , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose when I was just a teenager. I couldn’t get away from Art no matter what I did and how much I tried to learn new hobbies. I found myself watching cartoons all of the time and drawing things that I could see on television during these times I didn’t have social media or a camera to take pictures of things that I wanted to use for references. It was all about passion for me. To me, passion means purpose, and when you find something that you are passionate about you find purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Darryl Murphy. I am a comic book illustrator.. I grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina and I developed the love of art when I was six years old. After I graduated high school from E E Smith, I decided to leave North Carolina to go chase my dream in Chicago Illinois. I worked in Chicago and met many great people who helped push me in the right direction because of my love of comics. I did also have love in acting and ended up working on a TV show called the next great burger on esquire network and I’ve also worked on a film called Chiraq with Spike Lee. Following many connections and moving to San Diego, California, I made my mark in the comic book industry in a book called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 100 project book. This was with the hero initiative and this book came out in 2016. I went onto work for a comic book company where I created my comic book called Revagen. Since then I signed with Nickelodeon to have my Ren and Stimpy T-shirt design at stores like hot topic and box lunch. Now I work with Upper Deck in entertainment, creating marvel projects and I am also an editor and chief for voracious imagination masters comic book company. I attend many comic conventions in different states but mostly here on East Coast. I am a senior at the Rocky Mount College of Art and design and I am studying illustration with a concentration in sequential arts. I love to pencil I love to ink, I am also a mural artist and I love to animate.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities skills were areas of knowledge that are most impactful in my journey are networking being open to new ideas and opportunities and being resilient. For people who are early in their journey, some advice that I would leave for those people are too believe in yourself, don’t be afraid to talk to strangers who are doing the same things that you’re doing in the industry you’re pursuing, And always apply what you’ve learned through criticism no matter if it’s positive or negative feedback that you receive.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
There are many people who have been the most helpful in helping me overcome challenges. Those are as listed, God, my family,Marvel artist, Jason Keith, CEO of Toy Rat enterprises, Anthony Mendez, Katherine Marie, Brian Stelfreeze, And many others that are just too much to name. I have had some of the most talented in knowledgeable people in my life to help me throughout my journey in order for me to continue being successful.
