Meet Dashawn Russell

We recently connected with Dashawn Russell and have shared our conversation below.

Dashawn, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from failing….sometimes in life everything is not always gonna work in your favor and there gonna be a point you fall flat on your face, but as long you get back up and keep going and don’t let nothing stop you….you will be alright.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
i am a Connecticut PRO makeup artist that is dedicated to the craft of beauty and cosmetics as well as creativity. i have been in the profession for about 13+ years running and i have mastered the craft of the female face as well as male. i specialize in many forms of makeup but my absolute favorite form is full glam and editorial/fashion forward makeup. It was not an easy ride for me getting started, had to buy dollar store makeup beg for clients to utilize me and help me get to where I wanted to be, I even worked at a strip club doing exotic dancers makeup just for the experience. now that I’m at the level of my profession today i have worked for many photographers as well as done many fashion shows in the Connecticut circuit as well as NewYork. i have also worked with numerous models that i have gotten to meet as well as discovered myself. And with my dedication and hard work I’m was willing to build my influence and my career through makeup by giving myself to this craft to get to where I am today. I go by this motto “i don’t do makeup to change you, i do makeup to uplift you” that means even when i paint you up to be beautiful you will still see you because you are beautiful inside and out no matter what makeup look you have..

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
There are three words that I live by and keep close to my heart …..that’s TIME, PATIENCE AND FAITH!!! With TIME… this profession is not easy!!! Practice practice practice ALWAYS makes perfect. With PATIENCE….. you have to know that it’s not gonna come to you the next day just stay consistent and keep going. Lastly FAITH….. there are days where I want to just give and not achieve my goals as an ARTIST when something is overwhelming or stressful I just want to put away my brushes and say “i QUIT” but I believe in that person we cal GOD he said to me “faith without works is dead” and that what keeps me going every single day

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Well I have many people that help overcome my challenges when it comes to my creativity but the one person I can honestly say with my whole heart is a model I have gotten to know and become friends with and her name is “Zamarianne Bradley” she has truly been a beacon of my artistry every time that we get together and we want to create. She literally tells me to take it there and that makes me challenge myself to really really take it there when it comes to my artistry and she is always so supportive and so down to do whatever, when it comes to make up and editorial work she has always got me to push the envelope even further, and it always benefited me and her to get published in magazines whether it’s in the United States or abroad, so I truly truly give her her flowers because she honestly deserves them for always pushing me to do more extravagant and better things when it comes to my makeup artistry she definitely deserves it.
