Meet Dassah Mariee

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dassah Mariee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dassah, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I have always been the black sheep my whole life. It only become more prominent the older I got. In the area I currently live in isn’t so diverse, so I don’t tend to see a lot of people like myself. Especially business owners. So I try my best to be effective and successful so those who are like me have someone to look to to give them motivation to go after their dreams. Or to start that project they have been procrastinating on. I know for me I had others who were influential to me that made me want to go and achieve anything I put my mind to. I hope to be that for someone one day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Well I have my own hair boutique called Dassah’s Hair Boutique where I sell wigs, hair extensions, lashes and haircare. It is something that is really special to me because I am a one women show. I package, ship out and deal with all orders myself. It is something I take pride in, especially as a stay at home mom of 2. I hope to expand my business and open a location in the future, that is my goal right now.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perserverance is a huge one for me. So many times I have wanted to give up in my life, but I continue to push forward and not give up. Staying positive is also a big one for me. In a world that is so negative it is so easy to get caught up into it all, but I remain humble and positive that things will continue to look up. Support is also something I am thankful that I have. I have a very supportive husband and parents who are there for me and push me to continue to be great. The advice I would have for someone who is just now starting out on their journey would be to make sure what you’re going for is what you really want. There may be bumps in the road that may make you think it isn’t the right choice, but continue forward until you get to where you want to be.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing I think my parents did for me was letting me be myself. I started wearing wigs at a young age like around 15 and no-one understood why I wanted to do it, but my parents let me be myself. I will always thank them for that. I loved playing around with different hair colors, cuts and styles. I loved it. Others didn’t get me so much, but I didn’t care. I had the support of my family and that was all that mattered to me.
