Meet Dave Guthrie

We were lucky to catch up with Dave Guthrie recently and have shared our conversation below.

Dave, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?

For me this has always been a big motivator. Most likely derived from my stubbornness. Hahaha. Being told I can’t do something only motivates me further. For me the reward of proving negative beliefs wrong far outweighs not trying. Facing adversity and challenge perpetuates resilience and adaptability.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I started Simpy Subaru’s after over a decade working in the automotive industry. Throughout my time I have worked at many incredible shops and have been fortunate to learn from some of the industry best. When the time came to embark on the next chapter. I decided to follow my passion and open my own shop.
Throughout my career I have always been passionate about modifying my cars. Like many others; it is a form of expression as much as it is about the other attributes such as performance. Simply Subaru’s was founded with the goal to not simply repair cars but to personally connect with each of our customers. We understand that for many Subaru owners it is more than just a car. Getting to meet and discover the unique vision a customer has for their vehicle and helping to bring that vision to life is something truly magical.
While auto repair can be daunting, it doesn’t have to be complicated. We make Subaru repair and modification simple.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Patience is a virtue. Don’t rush. Make calculations, predictions, and place your bets… Don’t expect to figure everything out in the beginning. Nobody does. Be flexible and adaptable. Listen to the advice of others around you but dont assume everything they say will work for you. Success is not comparable, measureable, or defined.
Never Settle. You can always improve something. Avoid Lazy People! While it’s incredibly important to spend time with friends and family. Don’t become complacent! Always have your next goal in mind. Remember that you are a competitor! Everyone else doing what you’re doing wants what you want; just as bad as you do…
As mentioned earlier you can’t follow the opinions of those who don’t believe in you. Don’t be afraid of failure! Learn from the mistakes of others yet acknowledge you will indeed make your own mistakes!… BIG ONES!!! Most often the most painful experiences in life teach us the most valuable lessons. Just get out there and create something!

How would you describe your ideal client?

The one thing that we often run into is that many people are understandably struggling with increased costs. Particularly when it comes to automobile repair. While we overly understand the cost incentives to to repair your own vehicle. It is imperative that people understand that simply asking internet forums and AI for potential solutions will only result in a progressive list of what might be the problem. Far too often this results in people simply replacing parts without proper testing and verification. We therefore typically see this cost far outweigh the cost of properly diagnosing the issue. Additionally this further adds to the complexity of diagnosis when less expensive, unverified, and far too often unreliable parts are added to the mix. As a proud supporter of the right to repair act and sponsor of the Subaru Mechanics Facebook Group; We fully support a growing number of avid DIY’ers as fantastic customers. We truly believe if you can’t afford to have an issue properly diagnosed… Then you certainly can’t afford to do the repair twice.
